Tileset question
« on: June 29, 2012, 01:01:28 pm »

First of all, i am pretty sure this has been asked before but i don't know how to ask the search engine on the forum since i am unsure of the terminology i should use.

Is multy layered object possible in the future for DF ? I am sure at the moment it is impossible hence it is a programer related feature that needs to be added if i'm not wrong.
So in case the upper didn't make much sens, - to make items appear on character icon, as well as other states?

No it is not possible. Tiles are everything you got. The only thing which shows above other tiles are creatures. And you can't put anything above them.

I understand, and there is no way that in the future things could improve?

Well, that's what i was wondering. If the actual dwarf fortress version, or future versions of it, could support this tile upgrade.

Ok, and last question from me: is it actually hard to implement this feature?
And, is it me, or is Toady not a  big fan of tilesets? Almost like anti?

I think it's more that he is a big fan of the details, concepts, bug fixes, and other minutia.  As evidenced by the basic graphics and near lack of GUI.

Anyway, a little off topic here, i myself for example like LCS with it's actual graphics ! i wouldn't want tiles for that just because it's fine as it is. The representation would require a lot more details to make it worthwhile and it may shift the game towards a more comical, cynical, dark or any other mood, giving away it's neutral tone.

As an idea that came into my mind today about LCS, would be if it had a random pixel portrait generator for citizens. Would be really awesome, something more like the doom face portrait, but maybe with less details. Sliding even more into random portraits, Original War game had an EXCELLENT portrait generator for every soldier, was really awesome. Anyway i guess these kinds of generators are hard to make (heck, even a standard portrait would be hard to make, not to mention a generator.)
