Kobolds
« on: July 03, 2012, 09:24:37 pm »

Ok, I have a question. And please forgive me, but what the crap is up with kobolds in this game?

You guys have the weirdest definition of what a kobold is.

THIS is a Kobold
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Or This (ehh):
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Not a kobold.

Kobolds are lizard/dragon like folk, that live in caves that they have dug out. They are excellent miners. Why is it that in this game they can't mine stone and are tail-less?

Damnit, Putnam, I wanted to correct this foolery! :P

Ah well, better luck next time. There WILL be a next time. Just like there was a last time. Many, many "last times".

Everyone to their own. I like to imagine my kobolds are tiny dogthings.

You do know that the concept of a kobold is centuries old, originally not like D&D's use of the term, and is at least as mutable as that of the goblin (which is sometimes interchangeable with kobold), don't you?

@Putnam

Sorry, forgot to spoiler.

And those kobolds are a little better.

But what is this tomfoolery about Kobolds not being miners? Even in the Germanic Myths Kobolds were excellent miners. In DnD lore they rival even the dwarves.  It's just.... eh..... -_-

@weenog

It is not even the look that get's me. Its the idea that they cannot mine. Kobolds (even in the ancient myths) were excellent miners.

Oh, kobolds are probably miners--they do live in caves in-game.

However, as said earlier, kobolds aren't just DnD. They're apparently about as varied as trolls throughout history.

Nobody can mine except dwarves, normally.  This may be rectified in the future (and I for one look forward to enemies coming at me through the walls, even though the idea is also terrifying).  But at least kobolds fake it by often living in the pre-existing caverns (which, who knows, maybe were mined out by the kobolds before they discovered that thieving was more profitable for them, and abandoned the art).

Well, humans made sewers somehow. Either that or some sober dwarven miner was following one heck of an ore vein.

Man, some of my digging projects look like escher's staircase if I'm just following a vein rather than making rooms or strip mining.

I don't care about what my kobolds look like, furry, scaly, pointy ears, floppy ears... All I know is that they offer us petty annoyance and we offer them death. The foul-tempered rodents have it coming anyway.

I always imagine them as small thieving purple people, that look sorta like gobbos, but skinnier and frailer. Hmm, now that I think of it, what do gobbos look like?

Wait wait, where in DnD lore does it state Kobolds are good miners?

My own personal versions of kobolds, are made out of potatoes, and like traps, /way/ to fucking much. (Who the fuck booby traps their own front door? FUCKING KOBOLDS!) And one of them loved Masks. Kept saying, it like a proto pokemon. Mask!

----
Speaking of dNd kobolds does anyone have a link to that feared dungoen with low levels manned by kobolds that can take out high and mid level characters pretty easily?

There were Name's Kobolds  but I cant find them.

All over 3rd edition, possibly earlier but I didn't pay much attention to kobolds back then.  In fact the rivalry between the chief kobold diety Kurtulmak, and the chief gnome deity Garl Glittergold, springs from a "prank" Garl played caving in one of Kurtulmak's mines.  A merry jest to the gnomes (sick fucks), a mass slaughter of his people to Kurtulmak.

Even in the SRD which has most of the intellectual property stuff and detail stripped out, you can see hints of kobolds' connection with mining in 3rd edition.  Note the racial skill bonuses for the little suckers here.

There were also Tucker's Kobolds way back when, which were at least subterranean, though I don't remember if they did the mining themselves.
