What about the economy?

ESo what happened with that idea? I read that it was very buggy so it was scrapped, but that it's coming back in the future. Is there some timetable on that or was it postponed indefinitely?

It's on the horizon, like a lot of other things. I don't think Toady has timetables for updates unless he's right on top of them.

Economy has to do with everything, so it'll only be finished when the game is finished. That being said, he mentioned trade relations as one way of interacting with sites, which he's doing currently.

I think he was referring specifically to dwarves buying the useless crap that fortresses produce, as well as dealing in coin and having to pay rent. None of which will likely be making a return, at least until the stacking issues can be addressed.

You read my mind.

Just a day ago I thought about asking the same thing. But I am reluctant to make suggestions on this forum for fear of cluttering it. So instead I got an old version of DF. Its like a different game altogether.

I remember that, back in .28 I think? I made the mistake of minting coins, lots of coins. My fort ended up stopping because everybody was busy hauling their coins. It was crazy.

There was an interview with Toady where he answered this exact question a few days ago, brb and I'll find a link...

Edit:

AG: How will the Economy work, more or less, once it is back in full swing?

TA: It’s not settled enough to answer yet.  We’ve got items being built, stockpiled and traded between settlements in world generation, and that information theoretically can be used to handle supply/demand pricing and all that, and we’ve tossed around ideas for improving the trade agreements that are formed in world gen…  there was also the ideas for fairs, and there’s the whole tavern/inn idea.  Dwarves opened little stores before.  It seems like it’s just going to be built back in pieces.  The mess before partially came from dwarves having coins all over the place.  I’m still not sure how that particular problem is going to be resolved.

Only in DF is communism rated more highly than capitalism.

As soon as stacks become fixed or owning of mobile crates (bags, pouches, backpacks) be added that would be possible.
But I think Economy must be not external part of life, but daughter of T&P and relationships. I'll try to translate my suggestion about one framework for mandates, goals, ownership, exchange, collections; management and smart work priorities as soon as the battle with own abstinent laziness would be successful.

Main point here: "Money is not necessary for economy - goods and reputation is enough. Any item priced as it was payed."

Post it right here or in a standalone thread?
