Procedurally Generated Rifts
« on: July 10, 2012, 05:14:44 pm »

Rifts! Yes! As in holes in space and time that entire sites can form around! They can range from mysterious sources of healing waters, to rifts to other realms that you can send people to (like the REALM WITH NO SHRIMP, or the REALM OF ONLY SHRIMP), to terrifying rifts that demons spew out of, to rifts that threaten to expand and destroy the world!
(yes I'm suggesting that it should be possible for world generation to be interrupted due to global destruction as well)

Naturally, you can build your fort around an unclaimed rift, have a new rift be opened, discover an underground temple around a rift (and kill the local antmen and claim it as your own), or make a rift using a giant adamantine battering ram against the very walls of the universe!

I like this idea.  A beacon for interplanar beings similar to a Star Gate, but with a medieval twist.

Maybe have rifts spawn, creatures and vermin, not found in the embark biome.  Let the dwarfs construct em.  Hmm, gimme a sec, I just read a book with something similar to a rift in it.

What did they call it, not rift, but.. Ohh, my memory is mush.  It was a book about mythological Native Americans who lived on mesas and farmed corn, they had gates.  It was placed around the No Man's Mesa area.  What did they call those things?  Ugg.

Portals.  A kiva with a blind window where the sipapu belonged.  Here is the SciFi book about the Hopi, enjoy.  I really enjoyed it.  It had nice historical western-like twist, ya don't often find in SciFi books.

One cool idea, found in this book, is the way the Cliff Dwellers, keyed their cliffs.  They could climb down from almost anywhere, but to climb up the cliff, a person had to memorize hand holds, or find themselves near the top, with nothing to grip to, and a long way to climb back down.  Easy targets for a thrower to hit, while climbing back down.

This to me, sounded like a wonderful defensive strategy.  To key off a maze entrance right there on the cliff face.  Cya, Knutor

Giant tears in the fabric of reality, from which Lovecraftian-esque horrors could pour forth and kill everything to death? Or which we can send our equally-disturbing* Dwarves through to kill everything to death on that side instead?

DO WANT.

*Seriously, between the cat slaughter, mermaid bone farming and using babies as meatshields, there's no way you'd wanna be in the same room with them.

Did you play Oblivion, it had gates like this that randomly opened in there dynamic evolving worlds?

Problem there with theirs was that all the gear from in plane, over there, severely gimped the experience gain progression, over here.  Slip the noob thru the hole bait some nasty thru, have the guards kill it, then loot and gear up with penultimate weapons.  Then slip it on, and hack and slash, right on through the game, earning easy fame and fortune.

Something which would be easy to avoid, I would think, but a company as big as Bethesda wasn't able to avoid debunking their own experience progressions, thereby ruining their content, or DLC, similar issues arise in that very popular postapocolyptic game, that I can't seem to remember the name of.  The bane of any RPG, gear.  Sincerely, Knutor

Sounds good, of course other dimensions is something that has already been discussed, although I like the initiative of how they might work. Do you envision that they might cause the area around them to be imbued with special properties as in a sort of taint effect?

It would be more fun if the rift shattered the world, where places just end into nowhere (or another rift ), and the only way to get around would be to use other rifts and move through the different dimensions.

In order to prevent these from becoming to prevalent wizards and such should search for them and attempt to close them. It would be nice to if demons sometimes to create rifts, to summon more of their kin.

Isn't this kinda like HFS, only less world-destroyey?

The idea of more kinds of interplanar gates and travel would be neat. Send your enemies to hell, but suffer the risk of being dragged along with it! Shift to a pleasant plane to rest and recover in a setting that causes faster natural healing. Fight a mad sorceror that wants to open a gate to a plane full of hungry shadows, or a monster beyond time that eats chunks of the world, causing them to no longer exist.
(In-game, non-existent areas would be clusters of tiles, I dunno how they'd be displayed, which would simply destroy anything that entered them.)
