Tattoos and Markings
« on: July 11, 2012, 07:01:19 am »

Additional Civilization Tokens:
Code: [Select]
[HAS_MARKINGS:TRUE]
[MARKING_TYPE:TATTOO/PAINT/MARKING]

Basically this token will enable a race to have markings or tattoos designated in the typical images of their society (it would use the same code that engraving or any image setting would use for the race). This would add another aesthetic layer to descriptions of a creature or sentient, allowing you to tell all kinds of history related to it. Maybe this creature was in an epic battle and he has markings to commemorate it? Maybe that Orc has an image of his wife drawn onto his sleeve? Maybe that dwarf got drunk one night and made a bad decision to get Goat Cheese engraved across his back?

Then there are subtypes, which basically just determine how the marking is made, tattoos are inked onto the creature, markings are carved in (ouch), Paints are just simply painted on.

As it currently stands, this idea would apply to worldgen and other civilizations and not the player's playable civilizations. Only migrants and the starting dwarves would have randomly attributed markings until a suitable way for dwarves to get markings could be created (and not a complex industry, moreso like "if they're bored they might get a tattoo from a friend").

Planned--"branding" is/was on the dev plan as a punishment--that is, putting artwork on a body part through heat. Tattoos would be pretty much exactly the same, except with "tattooed" instead of "branded"

Branding is body art in a very much different context. I think OP is suggesting something a little more consensual, and different ethic views could be a lot of fun. Also, tattoos would make a great flavor element in adventure mode on enemies. Breath a little life into the dead, letting them speak for them selves (bonus points for watching their magnum opus sail off in an arc)

I can see having a "Tattoo Artist" labor in the Craftsdwarf section, kind of like Stone Detailing going with Masonry. Dwarven criminals could get tattoos of their offenses as a punishment. Friends would have matching tattoos. Maybe surviving a siege would cause the military to all get tats of the event.

Item-wise wouldn't need to add anything more elaborate than a sharp implement, like a needle or spike that could be made from wood/metal/stone. We could just have tattooing take place with one dwarf sitting in a chair/throne and the tattooer standing near them. Tattoos could use existing bags of dye in small amounts, much like we do with soap now. Dwarves get happy thoughts from good tats, they get tats according to their likes/dislikes, and more tattoos happen when dwarves attend parties.

Engraving for Dwarves pretty much sums it up.

no not exactly,i see this as more of a bloat for the planned groups and religions.

i had the idea that based on the seriouness (pardon that, i cant spell) of a groups leader, the type of marking required to be his follower. a good 75% of the groups wouldn't worry what tattoos or brandings you had, so long as you wern't a branded criminal. thoughts regaurding tattoos and brandings could also be aplied to cloths if styles are ever implemented.
for example, a dwarf "urist mcnormal" wants to join a group, "the frenzied stripes" a sort of fortress watch group that attempts to find and arrest vampires. (this would odviously require groups and a personality rewrite.) the group leader "urist mcseriousanduncomprising" requires that all members get a branding on their left upper arm of a skull and hammer. urist mcnormal dosn't want to get branded just to help prevent vampires, so he dosn't join the group and gets a minor bad thought.

That could be cool.

I'm just thinking moreso along the lines of worldgen, so randomly generated Elf A has a tattoo of a tree and elves around it, which symbolizes his homeland and place of birth, etc.
