Personalizing Rooms and "Free" Furniture
« on: July 11, 2012, 08:52:24 am »

I realize as a fortress builder oftentimes I have excess furniture lying about in my stockpiles that I don't plan on using for a long time, or I don't feel like spending my time manually allocating. I was viewing a picture of a 3x3 bedroom scheme online and it inspired me to post this actually.

What if you could designate furniture in your stockpile as "free" and Dwarves would take it and put it into their designated bedroom? Dwarves could use their likes to calculate what they might put up or display in there, as well as what they might do with it.

IE: I build 15 Cabinets, designate them as free, any Dwarf may take a cabinet (the game should prioritize those who don't have one versus one who does) to possibly put into their bedroom, then they'll take it back there, put it up, and use it automatically. Or if I have an extra set of tables lying about, maybe I can designate them as free and a few dwarves may choose to haul it back to their place.

Would be interesting to see the kinds of clustercarps that the dwarves come up with in their bedrooms by gathering free stuff.

Its too late for that.. my weapon traps are clogged with dwarf bodies, blood flows like a river through the entrance, the entire fortress is littered with dozens of bodies, my food stocks are all down there, if I build a wall the berserk dwarves outside will get the survivors..
There is no hope.. Only dwarf fortress..

I like the idea. But this seems almost like dwarf economy stuff. So I'd guess that this would be taken care of when the dwarven economy is fixed

Yea that's true, you could just sell the furniture.

Yeah, until dwarves can be taught how to not suck at economics and bring the fortress down with them, this will have to wait.

I think it would be nice to see dwarves having more personalised stuff in general. for example if you set a room for a child or a baby you may get engravings of dragons or whatever while a highly religious dwarf would have engravings of what gods he worships.
