Nickelpinch; a too US-currency-based app name?
« on: July 11, 2012, 01:42:44 pm »

I am building a web-based, open source finance app, that I hope to have released within the next 6 months. I made the mistake of choosing it's name long ago, and now I'm having a hard time coming up with anything different.

Current name: Nickelpinch

I liked the name, because penny-pinching is an old term, but it's 2012 and should be updated. :) Also easy to remember, spell, etc.

Problem: It is designed to be used anywhere in the world, with multi-language support coming in later releases. People who are not from the US, does this name turn you off? Should it be something less US-currency specific?

Nickelpinch does sound... weird to me. (belgium)

I second coincutter.

Nickelback never had this problem.

And a US-sounding name doesn't have to be a bad thing. Despite the recent financial hiccups, Obamacare and whatever else, the US still owns the image of being the centre of capitalism on this planet.

What problem is your app intended to solve for people? If you told us more about the app it might be easier to help you out.

First off, thanks for all the feedback, I really appreciate it. As asked for, here is a description:

Nickelpinch is a web-based, personal finance application. It's designed to work REALLY well on smartphone, as well as in desktop browsers. It is an app that lets you set a budget, then track your purchases. Basically, it's a way to view your bank account. (Note it doesn't connect to your bank account in any way, that is terrifying to me.) Instead of seeing just a balance, you know you have $X of that reserved for various categories like food, rent, etc. (All customizable of course) Here is a screenshot:

For example, lets say in your budget you want to limit yourself to only spending $200 a month on food. You go to the grocery store and spend $10. You open up the app, Click the big '+' next to food, put in $10 spent on food. Now on the main screen, you're $10 closer to hitting your budget limit of $200.

You can 'reserve' money for a category, so it doesn't show up in your available amount. (Shown in screenshot as a lock) This is handy for things like, rent or utilities. You can get away with not spending so much on random crap, but you want to be sure you've got that money sitting in your bank account for those things.

When you make an entry, you choose how you paid for it. This is super handy, because you can have credit cards connected to this. When you make a purchase on your gold card for food, nickelpinch 'moves' that money so instead of being waiting to be spent on food, it's now tied to your gold card. When you gold card bill comes, you have the money sitting in your bank account, ready to pay it off.

It's open source, meaning anyone can download the app and install it on their web server. Think Wordpress. I have used it myself in various forms for years and it changed my life. I actually don't overspend anymore, and I always have my money set aside for my bills.

Is that helpful?

Thank you so much for saying that! I should have mentioned, this is the first 'public' showing of what I've been working on for the last 4+ months. Any feedback is appreciated, but yay for liking it!

I like. :3

Does the app have to be connected to the internet to use it? People like me, who use iPods instead of iPhones, would be interested in using stuff like that without being in a WiFi zone.

As for Nickelpinch... It's OK, but Coincutter sounds nice too. Especially with that alliterative appeal.

That is up for debate. :) I can write it as an HTML5 application, and make it an iphone/android app that use it. The issue is, where would the data reside? I like the idea of having it 'in the cloud' so on your phone or pc you could access your nickelpinch account. Making an app that stores the data locally, and sync's it to the server when it is available is possible, but more complex. There would be leveling up of my coding stats, and that takes time. :)

I want to do it, but I think first release will be web-based only. I'm up against a bit of a time crunch, as we are expecting a baby in February, and I want this out the door before then. At least version 1.0.

Thanks for the feedback, and definitely I'm leaning for a new name now.

Some new name ideas:

greenbug
greybug
moneyfu (think kungfu)
coinpad

Any thoughts?

Unfortunately, coincutter.com is already taken. :/

As an amateur wordsmith, I have to say that Moneyfu is a pretty awesome name.

Nickelpinch has charm, man.
Also if I ever become a responsible person, I shall look out for this app! :P
