Eviction question
« on: December 29, 2007, 06:30:00 pm »

Order of events:
1.  A baroness arrived, with a tax collector
2.  I turned economy off in the init file (it previously was on)
3.  Dwarves are still evicted from their rooms

I don't want my dwarves to be evicted.

Did I have to turn economy off before the baroness arrived, or do I have to kill the baroness and tax collector in order to get the dwarves back in their rooms?

I believe your init change will turn on when you start your next Fort. I think.

Killing the tax collector might work.  You will have to kill off the new ones that come with each wave of immigrants.  If he can't appraise the rooms, they might get a fixed-value tax.  But it sounds like he's already done the initial apprasial.

Maybe I'll try to find the flag that controls economy.  No promises though.

Really, I suggest building a gym and/or a casino.

(Edited for spelling.  I really should preview before posting.)

I just built a water chamber that has some very nice rooms in it.   Each new wave of nobles gets locked in, and when I have them all, I turn on the pumps.

I thought of a easier, more clever way to kill them, but it requires those goblins to show up.   Put the Noble's rooms in a place that is separate from your fortress.  Lock them in and when the goblins arrive, unlock the doors.

The problem with this method is that the goblins may not lay siege enough.   I could let them starve or die of thirst, but they take way to long to die that way.  It is also a pain to wait for them to go to their rooms.  I wonder if there was a way to entice them to go in faster.

Is there a way to get doors to auto-lock once someone goes into a room?  That way I wouldnt have to keep checking to trap them.

What immediately comes to my mind is that you can set doors, floodgates, and bridges to trigger when a pressure plate is stepped on.  One of those should work to lock a dwarf in.  You will need to set that pressure plate to be triggered by dwarves.  And you will need a reset lever outside of the room.

While sacrificing nobles to Armok (heh, typed Amarok at first) is fun, I don't think that it accomplishes the task.  I had econ off in the init before the baron/tax/hammerer arrived, and no evictions began.  If you restart maybe it will go away.

I typically make a small annex inside the fortress.  It gets offices, bedrooms, and dining rooms for the Hammer and Captain.  It's well stocked with masterpiece food/booze, and each of them has a grand dining room.  There are actually two supply rooms so that I can airlock it and resupply as needed.  Of course they're never allowed to leave, but they're typically ecstatic about it.

Ok, just to confirm what everybody has been saying:

--Killing the tax collector, baron(ess) and other nobles doesn't end the economy (I tested it)
--Turning economy off in the init file does not end the economy if the economy has already started (tested it)
--Turning the economy off or on affects what happens when the baron(ess) and/or tax collector first arrive.  If it is on or off, the economy will respectively get turned on or off.  There is no way to turn it off when it is already on, and I suspect there may be no way to turn it on if it is off (someone confirm?).  This may be considered a bug.
--So, in conclusion, if you don't want economy, make sure that economy is turned off in the init file before you build your fort

Finally, like many players, I don't find that economy is really a good thing for the fortress.  It seems like it will be a cool feature once it is fully fleshed out, but as of right now it seems kind of incomplete.

The main reason for this is there is no "legitimate" way to get the dwarves enough money to afford their rooms.  There are some easy exploits you can do, but what fun is that?  A side annoyance is that the message window will constantly get spammed with price adjustments, as each noble seems to adjust prices constantly and there are quite a few nobles.

Exploits to get dwarves money include:

--Build a lot of levers, don't connect the levers to anything.  Assign the "Pull the lever" job, with repeat turned on.  Each time a dwarf pulls a lever he gets money.  Each lever can easily get pulled hundreds of times.

--Create unnecessary hauling jobs (someone confirm that hauling jobs pay money?)

I think the levers would be the casino that 0x517A5D referred to before.
The gym he referred to would be screw pumps that are not attached to anything.

Someone mentioned somewhere that hauling jobs pay 5 per trip. My economy is off so I can't confirm.
