Squad problems.

Hello, Recently a dragon attacked my well defended fortress ( I have about 20/70 as training active military) I figured i'd just squad some of them up and send them out but... It seems as though squads don't work very well. Upon squadding them up and activating them, then telling them to patrol where the dragon was, half of them went off to patrol the routes I had set and cleared before they joined the squad, half just sat around doing nothing.. and one or two actually made it out to get instantly owned because they had no backup. Needless to say this ended up to be a fiasco and my proud military is now about 7 strong, with most of them tantruming due to losing friends.

Am I just doing something wrong, or do squads completely not work?
