"Feyable" and non "feyable" skills
« on: December 29, 2007, 08:17:00 pm »

I'm trying to make or find or compile or something a list of how all skills behave with fey moods. I mainly want to know which skills are completely safe from fey moods, so that I can have my dwarves get to dabbling in a desired fey skill and no others. There is some discussion on the strange mood wiki regarding skills, but I'd like to make a comprehensive list, so that I don't mess up my dwarves.
If anyone knows if this has been done before or has a list or wants to help feel free.

"Feyable":
Carpenter
Bowyer
Mason
Armorsmith
Metal crafter
Blacksmith
Weaponsmith
Gem setter
Bone carver
Clothier
Glassmaker
Leatherworker
Stone crafter
Wood crafter
Mechanic
Siege Engineer.
Note: I am not sure about some of the others, such as Lye maker, wood burner, thresher, etc.

"Non-Feyable":
Every other skill that is only manual, which does not create an object of value, such as butchering, mining, and swimming.

Yea, but according to the wiki mining and engraving are considered trade (feyable) skills.
Trade skills = feyable
non-trade = non-feyable

It's crazy.

Here's a list from there:

List of non-trade skills:

   * Brewer
   * Grower
   * Miller

Skills that may be used and gained by dwarves with no trade skills:

   * Wood crafter
   * Stone crafter

Skills that use a different skill(See list above), but give correct skill:

   * Miner
   * Engraver
   * Furnace Operator
   * Weaver

I got a legendary tanner once. Made a leather something-or-other at the craftsdwarf's workshop.

Not entirely true.

Mining is feyable - dwarf claims mason's workshop and uses stone
Engraving is feyable - again, mason's workshop and stone
Tanning is feyable - dwarf claims leather workshop and uses leather (I think)
Weaving is feyable - dwarf claims clothier's and uses cloth
Gem Cutting is feyable - dwarf claims jeweler's workshop and uses rough gem
Furnace Operation is feyable - dwarf claims metalworks (not sure if ore or bars are required)

Oddly, I have never seen a fey dyer.

Woodcutting, fishing, trapping, ambushing, military skills, and most farming skills are not feyable (and are therefore useful for training dwarven stats).

Siege Engineer.

Is this true?  I ask because I just had a siege engineer (with no other skills, not even dabbling) go fey and became a bone carver. I was really excited about building masterpiece ballistae.

I do wonder how he managed to break his own back though.

Legendary gaining is mostly random and dependent on the items used to make the artifact.

I find the highest craft skill that the dwarf has is usually the one that gets the boost, if it's a peasant that has only ever harvested plants but at one time made a door, bam, suddenly a mason

I had a thresher who went fey. I'm not entirely sure what a thresher does.

Furnace Operator is no longer (as of the 3d versions, I believe) feyable.

It *was*, in the 2D version.

I have tested and verified in both cases (in the case of the former, by having a dwarf mood whose highest skill - by a large margin - was Furnace Operating.  However, he mooded to his dabbling Weaponsmith in preference).
