Dragons Terrorizing Towns
« on: July 12, 2012, 06:24:47 pm »

I would think this has been submitted before, but here is my idea anyway:

As Toady is working on goblins attacking towns in adventure mode, I think doing the same thing with dragons would be great (and probably simpler than goblins). That is, dragons should terrorize towns, basically burning and killing everything. Then, our hero would arrive on site, and for "service," everyone would scream that there is a dragon currently sacking the town. Then, the hero would approach the dragon, and they would duke it out in the streets. Dragons would be in town perhaps one day per week, and otherwise be in their lair.
My conception of dragons is that they would regularly siege towns for treasure or fun, perhaps needing a virgin sacrifice or something to calm them down. Right now, lords and ladies do complain about the beasts terrorizing the citizenry when you talk to them with "service," but it would be nice to see dragons in action. I haven't seen a dragon in adventure mode yet, but I think they live in lairs or just wander the wilderness - and that's kind of boring.

Other ideas:
Perhaps dragons could pick up loot as they go, and create a horde in their lairs. (How do fantasy dragons create their hordes anyway? Clawful by clawful? Seems like it would be inefficient. They probably steal treasure chests, I guess.)
Maybe dragons could take up residence in the city keep, or the catacombs, or a temple, or the dungeons (please, not in the sewers).

I want this more than smart goblins and bandits, by the way.

Tribute. The old story of sacrificing virgin women and treasure so the dragon doesn't sack the town. Which would be an excellent thing to add as well.

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.

Dumbass adventurers that thought they were heroes probably add significant quantities of loot to the hoards, too.

Gee, i hope the treasures don't all end up as pine buckets encrusted with pewter and pig bone decorated copper boots.

This would probably kill all The humans that much quicker. If the dragon breathed fire once the entire town would be killed. Not that I don't want this.

This. I think before Toady could try this, he would need to flesh out dragons more. Right now, dragons are pretty generic. They need more variety. Probably, a town in the snow would be attacked by some ice dragon or a town in the desert is sacked by some sand burrowing wyvern

I want Dragons to be more of an integrated gameplay element rather than just another megabeast -- the current system demeans their historic majesty, power and ambition. Give them nests or lairs atop high mountains like Minotaurs have with Labyrinths in the wilderness, and let them talk -- most Dragons I have seen have all been able to talk. If they can't, they're little more than beasts, and I want them to be cold, calculating and charismatic foes to face. Bonus points if we get to play as one.  :P

I'm like 75 percent sure that Dragons do this during World Generation, its how they get worshippers and kill counts.

But yea, the framework that was first demostrated with goblins probably meant to work for all intelligent entities.

Clearly dragons eat the treasure and poop/puke it out in their dens.

I can't imagine a town lasting very long with one raid per week. Perhaps extended raids, with the dragon hanging out in the deserted square to feast or search for this or that, would be a better solution.

If I recall correctly, Dragons are expected to have a kind of revamp. It is not a real revamp because they don't have pretty much anything right now. As said, they're generic. I heard (or may have misheard) that Dragons will be much polished anytime soon (a flexible soon) with more dragonic characteristics and stuff.

Dragons are epic no matter where. It is an offense having them as an ordinary creature, but it is a bigger offense not having them at all. This is probably why Toady added them generically and intended to improve them later.

You know what'd be awesome ?
Killing a dragon and having its worshippers put a price on your head, then get chased by bounty hunters.

Who says this has to be restricted to Dragons?
Or was it implied that Most Megabeasts should do this?
You could have, oh I dunno, an Ettin waltz on into town and start kicking people. And stealing the town guard's husbands.
Heck, maybe even a more primitive beast like a Hydra could track down a town for snacks?

I wouldnt be terribly shocked if this'll happen in DF eventually. The Dev Goals as described and the current thing ToadyOne is working on, should eventually allow this.

Like, you get a quest from Entity One to kill Dragon A. Dragon A has worshippers from Entity B. You kill Dragon A, and this irks Entity B who now has a goal to get revenge on the person who killed their dragon. They set a bounty on you or something.
