Valkyries
« on: July 14, 2012, 01:38:32 am »

Last week, I was watching Max Payne (Yes, it's a movie now.) and there was a part that mentioned that Valkyries are War Angels. Of course, I was unable to post last week (for certain reasons), but I thought that I would mention that when I heard those words, I thought of Dwarf Fortress. That's my main suggestion.

My sub-suggestion is the following-

In order to summon the Valks to help them in battle, the dwarf needs to drink a special elixir. However, only some of the dwarves can use the elixir to summon the Valks. The ones that aren't so lucky will have horrible hallucinations and kill themselves.

Yay or Nay?

nay

valkyries are choosers of the slain. it'd make more sense for them to come at a heroic dwarf's death and take his corspe.

Okay. I have to accept that. There may be others who agree with me though, so I'll wait.

I disagree with Valkyries being in the game. With randomly generated god's should come randomly generated angels. I want my angels of death, cloth and plump helmets!

Edit: Removed one of the ands that reproduced from "Death and cloth and plump helmets".

Cool.

Any way we can have them as non-angelic entities?

I say no to Valkyries.

Valkyries basically escort dead heroes to Valhalla, where they train and drink and fuck until Ragnarok. Valkyries are basically Viking receptionists. In fact, the name Valkyrie means "chooser of the slain".

I don't see the point in Valkyries. Your interpretation of Valkyries is also very undesirable. Even if we change your "Valkyries" to something else, it's still pretty specific. Your idea, sans Valkyries, reminds me of one of Toady's plans for artifacts. Maybe, there's an artifact that when you use, there's a chance of some non-Valkyrie entity appearing to help you. Let's say this non-Valkyrie-appearance event happens like, once every hundred, and the rest of the time Urist dies. That could be plausible, Valkyrie or no Valkyrie. Your Valkyrie elixir idea could be like that, but that's already a planned feature. Talking about Valkyries in that capacity is therefore a useless endeavor, since Toady's already got that on his mind. Beyond that, I say no to Valkyries.

I hope you notice that all my sentences have "Valkyrie" in them. I hope you're sick of the word "Valkyrie" and you will never use them again. Valkyrie Valkyrie Valkyrie.

Valkyries actually do a lot more then escorting dead heros. They are warriors afterall.

Valkyries in essence should be capable of being generated by the game but once again it should be determined by the dieties in play.

On that subject I really gotta get around to reviving the Angel thread. >_<

I want them as mounts.

Then, I will turn up the volume and blast Wagner.

I think the "Ride of the Valkyries" was actually a play on the pilots, not the planes.

Also, thumbs down for valkyries. They are chooser of the slain, even though they fight, their main function is to search for worthy warriors that are willing to keep fighting after their death for Valhalla against Niflheimr. It would be cool to have them getting your dead dwarves and using in favour of some deity and all, but that would imply getting all of the nordic mythology into DF, which has it's own (actually each world has it's own mythology), so adding Valkyries specifically would imply adding Odin, Valhalla, Niflheim, etc...

Potayto, potahto...

(But seriously, didn't know that, thanks. Also yeah, thumbs down for Valkyries. I'll find something else that resembles Vietnam-era helicopters. Mod giant eagles to breathe fire?)

Valkyries are the choosers of the dead, who take heroic warriors and make them immortal...

...so we already have them - the necromancers!  ;D

I'm going to go with NAY on the part of "Dwarf drinks elixir and summons someone who goes around, picking up the spirits of valiant warriors." On the other hand, valkeries might make sense to have, or at least have the idea of. E.g. valiant warriors who die in battle (as opposed to the Great Dining Hall Flood of 1052 or something) might be chosen by the gods to be in their gods' version of Valhalla or somesuch, and wouldn't come back as ghosts since they're too busy brawling and drinking and doing whatever dwarves do in DF-dwarven-Valhalla..

To be honest, I thought the elixir idea was kinda retarded as well. I like your take on this idea.

Also, as I've mentioned on some other threads, such valiant warriors might return to the fort to fight off a great evil, along with historical heroes, if the gods feel like it. I'm a bit irritated that I forgot that earlier.
