Did I just get a gift from the cavern creatures?
« on: July 14, 2012, 07:22:17 am »

So, I just found the caverns and before I could build doors/walls etc to block the path, a pile of chestnut logs appeared in my mine corridor that leads there. Is this a bug of some kind, did the trogoldytes give me wood (terrible pun, I know) or are there some kind of sneaky underground thieves that abandoned their loot? The latter seems unrealistic to me, since my wood stockpile is located about a hundred z:s upwards and my hallways are very narrow. No dwarf brought it there either, since there were none nearby (except for a mining team a couple of levels up, but they were busy mining). Any ideas?

There's a bug where deconstructing floors sometimes makes items teleport to their location. Did you recently remove a constructed floor?

Then it happened. Then I cringed. Then I picked it up and beat him to death with it, and then his buddies, too.

I've heard a few cases of items teleporting, and I have seen one case of mass teleportations. I'm not exactly sure what triggers this.

When you remove a construction, the game teleports the construction items into the tile where the dwarf who removed it is standing so they don't fall down and hit somebody on the head (and result in a fatal injury). It does this by checking every item in the construction's 16x16 map block; unfortunately, it forgets to check the coordinates to make sure they were actually in the construction's tiile, so everything in the block gets moved. There's a binary patch in the bug tracker that fixes this on Windows (SDL) and Linux.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Nope, I dont think I deconstructed anything wooden, but I could possibly be wrong. The thing is that the nearest constructions in my fort are very close to the surface. The logs would've had to teleport about 50-100 z-levels downwards. I looked around and found nothing that would hint towards gifts from wild creatures, so it's a bug anyway.

Who said anything about deconstructing something wooden? It's just as likely that you cut down some subterranean trees in the caverns and then removed a stone construction nearby.

I don't think I've ever seen Chestnut trees underground, though...

Something else probably brought that chestnut log down near the caverns, then - accidental garbage dumping, a cancelled carpentry job, or perhaps even a thief.

There was no dwarf traffic down there at the time, and it seems I had only breached a small cave that leads into a big floorless space. These "roof" areas end about two z:s down, where there's the actual caverns I guess. I see a part of the first floor, and some trogoldytes were having a mushroom party down there. I sealed off the small cave, since I'm afraid of flying fun stuff getting to my main stairwell. An FB can fly, right? So, I didn't have any access to the mushroom trees down there. Thieves seem unlikely, because they would absolutely be spotted by anyone of my 200+ dwarves, because of the narrow corridors and busy traffic (drinking------>retarded bin hauling------>staring at stuff-------->making pants------->drinking). So, what's going on? It must be a bug, I'd say. Any similar experiences? Any other ideas that haven't been yet discussed?
