Buying alcohol at start?
« on: November 17, 2007, 09:59:00 pm »

Just got the game, and as advised in the readme I looked at dwarffortresswiki for advice.  There's a handy new-player guide and one of the first things it tells me to do is buy stocks of meat and alcohol.  Got the meat OK, but there seem to be no alcohol items at all in the list of things you can buy.  Am I missing something?  If not, is this a problem in the game or in the wiki?

You can't buy a still either.

You can buy alcohol, when you search for a 'n'ew item to add, search for 'Dw'. That returns only the booze. Also, you 'b'uild a still once you get there, out of available materials, wood, rock, etc.

Like Huey said, Alchol is listed as DWARVEN under the (n)ew on the embarking page. Specifically Ale, Wine, Beer and Rum. Sugar, Syrup, Cheese and the rest are for other reactions.

Every game that I have played has started me with at least 2 types of alcohol on the starting list, most I think were even 3.
If you already have some purchased, they will not appear inthe lists of things to buy.

Buy as he said. Type "Dw" and look for dwarven wine, dwarven rum, dwarven ale and dwarven beer.

I suggest buying lots of wood and plump helmuts then have your carpenter churn out lots of barrells and your brewer churn out lots of alcohol. Of course this requires you to have one of each.

I do this Because the plump hemuts you buy to start are in stacks of 5, which turn into 25 brew which will all fit in one barrell. A great barrell saver instead of taking the 5 drink per barrell to start. Or the few plants per harvest of grown crops.

Thanks guys, but none of the items you mention are present.  Typing the initial letters, such as Dw, just produces a blank list.  They aren't in the list of things I've already got either.

I resorted to scrolling through the entire list of available items.  No alcohol of any kind.

So... what's all showing up on the starting list of items to take, then? When you first start preparing carefully it should read:

Copper pick [2]
Steel battle axe [2]
Iron anvil
(60 units total of dwarven alcohol, in 1-3 varieties)
Plump helmet spawn [5]
Pig tail seeds [5]
(random meat) [15]
Plump helmet [15]

I tried starting a new game.  This time entering dw gives me a choice of dwarven cheese and dwarven milk, still no alcohol.

Neither game gave me any type of seeds either.

I've got v0.27.169.33a which is described as 'a new and unstable version'.  Should I take the offer on the website to download a previous version?

I'm only getting the first three items and the meat.  That's happened three times now.

Seems like your game's plant definitions are messed up. Did you generate a world from scratch or did you download a pregenerated world? If the latter, are you sure you downloaded a world compatible with the latest version?

Generated from scratch, random seed.  I'll try generating a new world.

Thanks for your help and quick response on this.

Did you save over the last version? That will mess up the raws files and make the game go wonky.

If a newly generated world doesn't work, look in the /raw/objects folder from your Dwarf Fortress directory and open up the file matgloss_plant.txt. The file should begin with an entry something like this:

code:

matgloss_plant

[OBJECT:MATGLOSS]

[MATGLOSS_PLANT:MUSHROOM_HELMET_PLUMP]
[TILE:6][COLOR:5:0:0]
[NAME :plump helmet][NAME_PLURAL :plump helmets]
[GROWDUR:300][CAVE][VALUE:2]
[DRINK:dwarven wine:5:0:0]
[DRINKVALUE:2]
[SEEDNAME :plump helmet spawn][SEED:4:0:1]
[GENPOWER:2]
[SPRING][SUMMER][AUTUMN][WINTER]
[FREQUENCY:100]
[CLUSTERSIZE:5]
[EDIBLE_VERMIN]
[EDIBLE_RAW]
[PREFSTRING:rounded tops]

If you don't have a matgloss_plant.txt file under the directory /raw/objects, or  you don't see the above information in the file, then there's your problem right there and you should probably reinstall (in a fresh directory).

I generated a new world, started a game in the new region, and the problem's gone away.  Thanks for all who helped.

Actually, all you needed to do was change the civilization you start out from. I think you press tab once on the location select map.

Yep this occured because the raw materials available to each civ are randomly determined during woeldgen. Occasionally you'll get unlucky and have a civ that has no access to a basic raw material such as subterranean plants in this case.
