Games with an arab/muslim theme?
« on: July 16, 2012, 04:28:57 am »

I've recently been on an arab/muslim/middle eastern/whatnot streak between playing Sword of Islam and reading Arabian Nights, and I'm wondering if anyone has any particular games to recommend which fit the general theme. Mods are certainly acceptable, though games where the distinction is only superficial (ie: you can play as arabians in civ 4, but there's no flavour) aren't preferable.

Prince of Persia?

Only really the first two (For the PC) and only barely.

Any Prince of Persia after that is only "desert" flavored. (Or another way to put it... Aladin is more Arab then the later Prince of Persias)

Anyhow... Medieval Total War 2 lets you play a Muslim country.

Assassin's Creed is an obvious one. Otherwise, sadly, arabians are somewhat ignored. I myself wish there was more on that culture.

Stronghold: Crusader has a lot of arabian flavour in it, though really the distinction between europeans and arabians is very little. Still thought something worth mentioning.

Sadly, that's probably the best you'll get.
In this twitch-based game you play as a young, opium-addicted Persian mass-murderer with apple fetish.

Spice Trade - old indie game about being a spice trader in 14th century Iraq. Graphics are stylized to look like medieval art. Never really got into it, but it was fairly popular on freeware game sites back when it was released.

Civilization 5 allows you to play as Darius of Persia and Harun al-rashid of the Ottomans. There's probably also Arabian civilizations in the earlier games.

Al-Rashid is the leader of Arabia in civ5. And no wonder, seeing how the historical figure died centuries before the emergence of Ottomans.

Oh, by the way, in the fantasy civ4 mod called Fall from Heaven, the Malakim civilization is modelled on the Arabian theme, complete with the world turning into deserts under their cultural influence.
