Is there a way to speed up dwarf movement?

I have half my population or more locked up moving wood.   I have a few legendary wood choppers and they are plowing through the forst quite fast.   I could tell them to not chop down so many trees, but the thing is, I really need the wood.  I can burn through it so fast by making charcole (which I am always low on despite having 4 wood furnaces), barrels and bins.Do roads make them walk faster?  Is there a way I can improve the gathering efficency?

Not without cheating or training of attributes.

puffs:
put stockpiles in the center of each screen inside your forest, once those are full make a large central stockpile close to your fortress that takes from the peripheral stockpiles. This makes it so that the dwarves move all the logs into the outer stockpiles first, which cuts down on time lost to drinking/eating/partying/sleeping.Also consider putting food and drink stockpiles midway out there, as well as carving out some bedrooms for your haulers out there.
