No, bogeymen simply add tedium. They are rather trivially dealt with by simply having followers or sleeping somewhere safe for the night (remember this includes beaches) and only become an issue when your followers die and you happen to be far away for a safe place to rest for the night. Personally I feel followers are boring to have around and they are really annoying because they make crossing rivers much harder than it needs to be because they can't really swim. Finally, they really aren't any fun to fight. They aren't particularly tough or anything and depend entirely on surrounding you and getting one lucky lethal shot through (ok, that goes for a lot of enemies, but still).

I've never had companions, and I walked across the entire world without hunkering down. I only met two groups of Boogymen.

Bogeymen aren't really all that hard, unless it's a starting adventurer. Even then, if you encounter them it's just a case of them following you single file, falling over each other to get to you. They'll teleport every so often, but then you just start running in another direction. I think you charge every time you move into a standing bogeyman, so that should give you a couple of turns of movement toward the nearest shelter.

You're best bet is to have good defensive skills and a at least one good weapon skill. They're slippery buggers, but if they don't get a hit on you, you can run around until dawn.

Legendary biter
You shake the bogeyman around by the upper body and the severed part sails off in an arc!
The bogeyman upper body is torn away and remains in your grip!
You spit the bogeyman upper body!
The spinning bogeyman upper body strikes the bogeyman in the head, shattering the skull, forcing the skull through the brain and tearing the brain!
The bogeyman upper body has lodged in the wound.

A couple of points in Observer, and ambushes become a rarity.

If you're being picked on by one particular bunch of bandits, level up your sneaking, find their camp and strangle them all.

1:) Get two to three companions.
2:) Get ambushed.
3:) Run behind tree/ramp
4:) Sneak away.  After you watch your friends die, of course.

Best part is the bandits typically tell you who they are.

The spinning pillow hits the goblin in the head, bruising the muscle, jamming the skull through the brain and tearing the brain!
The goblin has been knocked unconscious!
The goblin has been shot and killed.

And it wouldn't be complete without Pillow Men.

The spinning pillow hits the Pillow Man in the upper body, bruising the luxurious goose-down stuffing.

"You charge the pillowman!  The pillowman looks astounded by the ferocity of the attack!  You hit the pillowman in the upper body, and both tangle and fall over!

You enjoy a restful night sleep spooning the pillowman!"
