So yeah; now we've got a car-sized, semi-autonomous nuclear-powered robot with a laser on another planet so far away it takes light 7 minutes to get there from here.

I wonder if scientists ever stop and look at what they're doing and realize: "Holy shit. We're building a robot to send to a planet a million miles away so that it can vaporize rocks and analyze their composition."

Dude(tte), they totally, totally do. The sheer wizardry of what they do is how they manage to bull through the near infinite mind-numbing tedium and minutely varying repitition that makes up the bulk of the science magic.

Indeed. I think I would be much more inclined to do Calculus if my equations were going to be sending robots into space to fire lasers at rocks. Y'know, for SCIENCE!
