That hasn't been said really. It's only a simulation, so accuracy can be doubted.

On a side note, lichen won't really help terraforming. Sure, they'll create soil, but they won't help with the acute lack of atmosphere.

Also hundreds of year is a conservative estimate. Thousands is more likely.

It's known as the Oppai-Kaiju effect. The islands of Japan generate a sort anti-gravity field, which allows breasts to behave as if in microgravity. It's also what allows Godzilla and friends to become 50 stories tall, and lets ninjas run up the side of a skyscraper.

Apparently much sharper than anticipated.

Well, yeah, they lost one of their previous rovers by driving into the sand, so it's understandable that they prefer more solid ground.

They should set up an obstacle course with sand and sharp rocks outside Mission Control. Whoever can't make it through barefoot doesn't get to drive the rover anymore.

Almost, but not quite. You have to do it blindfolded as well. You're allowed to take a peek every so often, but if you do you have to wait 30 minutes before you can progress again.

Curiosity and Cassini will be shut down due to budget cuts by 2015-2016
Why does NASA get all the budget cuts.
I can only assume the government decided to give up and concede to China.

Is that it, government? Are you giving up and admitting defeat to a bunch of commies?

Apparently $3,000 millions worth of tax dollars being funneled to Weapons Manufacturers and Military Operations is still not enough. They've got to cut more from education and NASA now.

And they wonder why the rest of the world is leaving the US in the dust when it comes to technology, academics, and industrial growth.

EDIT:
Spoiler: NASA Budget over time (click to show/hide)

It's been shrinking, and inflation has made what funding it gets even less valuable; they get less than a penny for every tax dollar right now. And despite that, NASA provides the rest of the country several times more in Economic Growth than they receive in funding... depending on the year, they provide 3 to 5 times their funding back to the rest of the country in new jobs, technologies, industrial production, and so on. Something very few government agencies can claim. For instance, they created $95,000 Million in economic growth in 2002, on a budget of about $20,000 Million... and their funding has been cut to about 3/4 that since then.

Meanwhile, the Department of Homeland Security's budget has gone from $16,000 Million at their creation to somewhere near $75,000 Million, not to mention that no one gets to audit what they're spending money on for reasons they decided... and whoever thought it was a good idea to give them the authority to decide whether or not they would be audited was CLEARLY thinking ahead. For all we know, they could be spending tax dollars on nice houses and fancy cars, or funding rebel groups, or whatever, with absolutely no accountability.

And I misspoke earlier regarding the Military budget. It's actually $600,000 Millions. More than I can honestly conceptualize.

NASA is all about math, science, and hope. If our public school system is any indication, our government wants to stamp out those three things as quickly as possible.

Easy target. Republicans block any reduction of the military or tax rises, paranoia blocks any cut to Homeland security, Democrats block any reduction of social security.
