Threats originating from inside the fortress
« on: August 02, 2012, 01:00:17 pm »

As far as i've played into the game all threats to my forts have come from outside. And i've noticed that the more experienced players, after embarking, quickly barricade their Dorfs inside a mountain.
The only real threat to the fortress occurs after you follow the candy cane to the circus (and that's only if you have your mines joined to your fort).

I'd like to see more danger coming from inside the fortress. Like Dorf serial killers, infiltrators that sneak inside to disable traps and lower the bridge to let their friends in or assassins who attempt to assassinate your nobles.
Or even more mundane things like Dorfs slipping on wet stone and breaking a foot.

I just think the fortress is too much of a safe haven right now.

Or what about monsters or even rival dwarves digging directly into your fort from underground?

Dig-enabled foes would be awesome as long as they're rare.  Siege machines capable of breaking down walls would be cool, too.  They shouldn't be able to destroy a wall instantly, but perhaps after a minute or so.

I don't wanna be that guy, but vampires are sorta serial killers, human diplomats disable any traps before they siege, and then I believe gremlins can sneak in and pull levers to lower bridges.
I agree with you though, there should be more events that can happen in a fortress.

Vampires? Sure, they're not much of a threat, but they're there. Also tantrumers, berserk dwarves, stupidity...
Alright, traitor dwarves and such would be neat, and criminals would make sense, but for now we're basically running the equivalent of dwarven frontier settlements--only a few hundred people. At this level, there's not likely to be much crime. Eventually, a few cutpurses perhaps, but everyone at least knows everyone else by face and probably name, so crime isn't much of an option.
In short...wait, it'll come eventually as it is PLANNED!

How long does it take a dwarven miner? That's about how long it should take a goblin miner or somesuch.

Well, the major issue is that there isn't a lot of value aboveground. Trading needs to be made useful, and farming less unrealistic (infinite food from an underground soil patch.

My fortresses always suffer from famine, perhaps due to their single z-level nature. (horrible logistics)

The part i envision infiltrators to play is that they arrive a little while before a siege happens. They sneak inside the fort and stay in a secluded place until the siege occurs. They could then path back out of the fortress, disabling any traps they come across, un-linking things from levers, jamming doors open and lowering bridges.
From the moment they arrive on the map they should be hidden, to the point of only being revealed when they start damaging your stuff or when a Dorf bumps into them (attempts to occupy the same space the infiltrator is on).

Possible things I can quickly think of:
diseases like plague
class warfare
more crimes
new fun indidents such as falling in stairs
walkouts
plots inside the royal family to inherit the crown,
advanced cave ins
systems within the fort which require resources such as heating and lighting with torches

And they're mostly all planned.

Something like that, but I would prefer there to be torches and light levels, so thieves/infiltrators/other sneaky types can only be spotted at the same tile in very dark conditions, but easily spotted further out the brighter it is.

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.

Of course, that's assuming that there's no issues like hearing or smell. Seriously, I think you've been playing too many stealth-based games. Hearing a goblin shouldn't be too hard in a dark area unless it's good at sneaking. SMELLING a goblin should be easy--they are less hygienic than dwarves, AFAIK, what with their stinking guts and all. So...yeah, a certain ability to detect goblins in the darkness would be good.

That depends, maybe if you keep your dwarves clean of all the blood and vomit they seem to accumulate. However the question is how good dwarven smell is. And yes, sound/sneaking ability should definitely have an effect. But mainly my point is just that I think there should be conditions where its easier to notice something sneaking in.

Obviously. Of course, such things as bathing, lanterns, and padded shoes need to be added before we can really affect them.

I've only just started playing seriously a few days ago, but I've heard that you can find kidnapped dwarves amonst gobling sieges. wouldn't they be better assassins than goblins.

True it would be better instead of them doing a full frontal attack to "migrate" to your fortress then advancing goblin agenda from inside, would synch good with new justice system.
