I bought a crappy watch
« on: August 08, 2012, 06:28:29 pm »

And I'm not sure what one of the buttons does.

Spoiler: What it looks like (click to show/hide)

The lower of the two bumps on the right is a knob that can be pulled out and turned to set the watch. The upper one is a push button with no discernible effect. There was no manual that came with my $4 watch from Wal☆Mart, though apparently there was supposed to be a 'Light Featru!' (sic) There doesn't appear to be a glow-in-the-dark ring or electric light.

Any ideas, theories, or wild speculation to be had?

There should be a model number or some form of arcane identification hidden on the watch somewhere that you can google to find the manual.

LDC74707W is the top number, it gets no results on Google. SR626E is apparently the type of silver oxide battery this watch uses. Around the outside rim of the bottom is inscribed:

My understanding is that some cheap merchandise is completely and thoughtlessly copied from more successful models, even when they remove or modify rather obvious features. It's possible this watch has a button because nicer watches have secondary buttons, even though nicer watches also have functions to go along with them.

In a similar vein, it might just be there to look good, running off the theory that looking nice is the only selling point they've got.

That truly is arcane. I'm trying to do some sleuthing based off of this. The only info I can find is in these pages:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Quartz-Wristwatch-Compass-Japan-Movement-/110930456569 (mentions Japan Movement as the manufacturer and it's "a126", but may be different since it's actually "a126-3"?)
http://www.chacha.com/question/what-is-japan-movement-a126-watch-price (Great answer, real helpful, thanks a lot)

Unfortunately, all the tidbits I've found point to it being essentially this (a cheap Asian knockoff), or if not a knockoff then a watch that is just extremely poorly documented.

...You sure it isn't just to activate the 'Light Featru' (sic)? Just because it doesn't work, doesn't make it any less of a featru. :)

Is it a bug? Because the general consensus around here seems to be that bugs are features.
