Not all DDR3 is the same, check if the CPU needs DDR3 with a specific voltage. I know AMD chips normally need 1.5V DDR3, but I don't know about Intel.
DDR3 actually do have standard voltages. They were designed to run on 1.5v, low voltage DDR3L runs at 1.25v, and Ultra low voltage runs at 1.1v.

Yeah, but there's a lot of 1.65V DDR3 kicking around, like this: http://www.ebuyer.com/195372-kingston-8gb-ddr3-1600mhz-hyperx-xmp-memory-khx1600c9d3k2-8gx
(more accurately it can do DDR3-1333 at 1.5V, but needs 1.65V for DDR3-1600)

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Its considered obsolete now as manufacturing methods were able to drop the voltage rates, i can find more 1.5 than the 1.65 :P

It's still worth checking, as you admit that there is still 1.65V ram around and even being sold.
