Why does DF hate me...
« on: August 16, 2012, 04:41:17 pm »

I'm not joking you it's like the game started to hate me. Every time I gen a world: "Dwarf Fortress has stopped responding, Windows is checking for a solution to the problem.". When I try to enter a major site on fast travel by going to the edge and stopping fast travel, like a tomb, " Dwarf Fortress has stopped responding, Windows is checking for a solution to the problem.". But why? It's never done this before and there isn't any reason why it should start junk like this!

On my computer, if DF uses lots of power and doesn't do anything for a while (like when the years are passing during Large worldgen) then Windows assumes it's stopped working. I don't know how to fix it though and I could be wrong >:I

This is the thing I hate most about windows. At least mac doesn't force you to quit things if you think they are still working. :P

Though you do trade it for access to all those nifty utilities.

No, that's not the problem. It's been able to do about an age or two of worldgen, but now it immediately crashes at about 16 years, plus like I also said it crashes sometimes when exiting fast travel.

Huh? DF lists itself as (Not Responding) after every single autosave, but it never FORCES me to close it unless the program has actually frozen. Windows cannot close anything which you think is still working. Hell, Windows can't actually force you to close anything ever.

It does stop me from inputing anything into DF though, such as stopping world gen, for example, since a "windows is checking for solutions to your problem" window pops up with only the options "send a report" or "don't send a report"; both of which result in windows force quitting DF.

If these are recent developments on your current setup, it sounds more to be a PC optimization issue than a DF issue.  Installed anything lately?  Using a new wireless, laser, 9 button mouse?  Got some new bot-ware from that midget porn site you tell people you don't go to, ever, no way, not me!?

When a previously stable process begins to act un-stable, something has changed.  If it's not DF (or an add on) then start looking elsewhere.

I know it sounds silly, but check your available storage memory.
Also, check your virtual memory, though if that was the case, windows explicitly states that the problem is with the virtual memory.

Also, what are your specs, and what other softwares were you running at the time? DF has extremely heavy PC usage, I have a pretty decent laptop and I can't run anything but the most important processes while I'm playing DF. Even watching videos gets extremely laggish.

Have you tried reinstalling DF?

Also, if you dont maniacally click something when its "not responding", windows wont close it.

Well, my pc sucks when it comes to graphics, but idk about how well DF works on it. I re-installed lazy newb pack, which fixed world gen. Now I just gotta check saving, cuz every time i'd save it crashed.
