my fortress is a mess
thiosk:
Its only my third or fourth one (the first... three? died of thirst, one in the winter one in a siege.)
I see some gorgeous setups here on the forums, screens people take of their entry halls and such. How long did you play before your forts went from purely unplanned utilitarian disasters to the fully functional beauties with working water and magma fluid systems?
AutomataKittay:
I've been playing since shortly after first version of 40d was available and haven't bothered to make a good-looking fortress until recently. So around... 3 and half years? It's more out of disinterest in visual beauty than anything, though, and it take a lot more effort making something that looks good, as opposed to efficient industrial flow :D
I've went through at least two dozen fortresses, if we're going by fortress count, none in truly difficult terrains.
daveralph1234:
It depends what you consider beauty. I consider industrial effeciency to be the upmost (and cirtanly most dwarven) form of beauty, and so personally, it didn't take me long to reach something I consider satisfactory. But thats the thing with creative projects, there is no real definition of what is and is not 'good'.
To give a more useful awnser, most people loose their first few (3-6) fortresses without really achiving what they would have liked, after that, most people have some idea what their doing, and so actually set out on a project. My only real advice, especially when starting out is, don't over plan, you will just drive yourself more insane with each fallen, failed project.
If you really want a proper, nicely planned, orderly fortress, I've heard that some players build 'temporary housing' near the edge of the map, while they dig out/plan the fortress proper.
Particleman:
I've been playing for about four real-life years, and I'm still working on that. I've managed to create some neat looking stuff (in my opinion, at least,) but aesthetics are pretty much the furthest thing from my mind while I'm playing.
VerdantSF:
Quickfort made my DF life soooooo much simpler. Nowadays, when I've come up with a good layout, I make sure to create a blue print so that I don't have to start from scratch next time. Leaves more time for other things when you already have several levels all planned out.
