34.11 combat awarded nicknames help
« on: September 01, 2012, 12:40:22 pm »

I think I'm having a n00b moment. :(

Dwarves who have multiple kills of intelligent creatures will be automatically awarded a badass nickname or title. However I cannot get it to properly display for some reason, of which I have no idea why.

The problem is that when I go to stats, and then thoughts and preferences, there's a huge pile up of names. There's the full dwarven name, which may be 3-4 words long, and then there's the translated title/nickname, and then profession name. Even on a very large screen with the window maximized, this string of names is too way too long, so it ends up being compressed down by dropping letters, which turns it into a huge string of gibberish.

Is there any way to get rid of the full dwarven name, so it only displays the translated name? The translated name also includes the full dwarven name, so it ends up looking like this:

Kol Sarveshemuth Agstheshom -- Kol Furancebeak the Aching Silences -- Thane

Note that "Kol Sarveshemuth" and "Kol Furancebeak" are the same thing, so about half of the line of text repeats itself which crowds out everything else.

I want it to just display this:

Kol Furancebeak the Aching Silences -- Thane

And then get rid of that first part. Is that possible? I remember that it was. I just forgot how to do it.

Next thing you know, I'll be throwing a tantrum at an empty chair. :(

1. Ctrl-c Ctrl-v your save folder and check it up in legends mode

2. Edit the name of your Dwarves (y) just before the thoughts screen and replace the first name/profession with a single character.

This is in dwarf mode.

Also that does not work. If I edit the nickname for a dwarf, it turns into:

test -- test -- Thane

Or if I also remove custom profession name, its:

test -- test -- Wrestler

This completely eliminates the earned title/nickname through combat.

This is in dwarf mode.
Abandon the copied fortress and check legends

If your dwarfs aren't wrestlers, check their weapons for the full names.

I wonder if the game has become odd.

There is an init option in one of the init files that controls the way nicknames are displayed. Have a play in there.

For me just pressing f12 to activate truetype seems to work. Try that.  :)

I also just had a human diplomat enter from the surface, hold a meeting, then exit the map via hell.... I guess he thinks he's pretty hardass.

I'm surprised it took so many posts before someone suggested it. ;)  F12 to toggle truetype is definitely what you want for this.  I use this regularly to verify any trucated name that might be the wrong dwarf (usually when assigning to a squad in the military screen).

F12 did it.

There's some weirdness with display, but F12 does allow the full name to be displayed rather than truncated to hell and back.

I'd still prefer it to display this:
Kol Furancebeak the Aching Silences -- Thane

Rather than this:
Kol Sarveshemuth Agstheshom -- Kol Furancebeak the Aching Silences -- Thane

There just isn't need for the name to be repeated twice. Its that double listing of the name that is triggering the truncation of the name. Haven't been able to get this fixed despite tinkering with the init files, though I clearly do remember this not being an issue with previous builds of the game. Its very weird.
