Let's Play Aurora: Battlestar Artemis -- DAY 6
« on: September 05, 2012, 10:55:37 am »

40 years after the end of the First Cylon War, they returned with fire and death, destroying the Twelve Colonies in a sudden surprise attack and crippling the Colonial Fleet. Scattered survivors begin to coalesce around the remnants of the Fleet. Rumors exist that the Battlestars Galactica and Pegasus survived, and shepherd a patchwork fleet of vessels towards the legendary 13th colony, Earth.

But this is not their story. This is the story of the Battlestar Artemis and its own ragtag, fugitive fleet.

(image shamelessly stolen...apparently someone else out there ran an online RPG on a "Battlestar Artemis" as well. Looks like it's defunct now, so I hope they don't mind.)
OOC: I wanted to do a "Hey, let's pretend we're in BSG!" type game, but decided that I didn't want it to be the Galactica, because people might feel too inclined to try and match themselves up to certain characters or follow plot lines from the show. And I want this to be an original storyline.

This will be something of an experiment: part Aurora LP, part Mafia game, part roleplay. Each player will take on a role, either military or civilian. Military players will range from the Admiral in charge of the Artemis, to individual Viper and Raptor pilots and squadron leaders. Civilian players will be the captains of various civilian ships in the fleet. Major non-combat decisions will be made by the Quorum of Twelve, elected by the civilian players from among themselves. There will also be a President, elected by *everyone*, for a one year term. The President will be doing most of the actual decision-making, but can be overridden by a majority of the Quorum. And, the Admiral can always invoke martial law if they feel the civilians are endangering the Fleet.

I'm soooooooooo in on this, but I'll need some time to decide on a character.

That said, give us more details on the Aurora game set-up. What sort of tech level are you going to start us at? Are we playing with missiles? Maintenance on or off? Jumpdrives?

EDIT: Oh, and give us some ship designs once you've got them.

It'll be a fairly midrange level of tech for the Colonials, Cylons will actually be lower-tech in some areas.

Missiles will be few but powerful (and of course, irreplaceable) for the Colonials. Cylons will use a lot more missiles (especially basestars), but I'll nerf them somewhat (like making 1/4 to 1/2 of the weight of the missile be a geosensor), and it'll be offset somewhat by the Artemis's point-defense umbrella.

Haven't decided about maintenance yet. Most of the fleet will be civilian, so it won't be such an issue. I plan on having much of the civilian fleet carrying the supplies (infrastructure for building colonies, raw minerals, fuel, some asteroid miners and sorium harvesters) so I could easily just have a few freighters brimming with maintenance supplies for use as needed. Of course, over time without an overhaul....

And yes, all civilian ships will have jumpdrives, as will the Battlestar. Raptors will be unarmed, jump-capable FACs with a good sensor suite, suitable for scouting ahead into new systems or surveying planets, but limited to a couple billion km range. Vipers will be fast fighters with two guns and a single missile rail, no jumpdrive.

The Artemis itself will pack some big-ass railguns, and a slew of CIWS and short-range gauss cannons for point defense (in the reboot, Galactica mounts something like 512 point-defense guns). And obviously a ton of fire-control systems. Active and passive sensors will all be part of the DRADIS suite. Civilian ships will mount small passive sensors for navigation.

There will be a variety of civilian vessels, but I'll try not to make any of them *too* slow. They'll all serve some purpose more than just window dressing, even if it's just hauling raw materials.

Cylon raiders will be fast, lightly armed (gauss cannons) fighters, heavy raiders will be somewhat slower, a bit more armored and pack six gauss cannons and a missile rail.

Basestars....well, let's just say they won't be able to take on the Artemis one-on-one, but you still won't want to run into one. :)

I'll be playing the Cylons fleet fairly and simply. If you guys use a decoy plan, they'll probably fall for it. They'll be sending out standard patrols and such and have to find you first before they can move to attack. I'm not playing them to win, just to provide that constant backdrop menace. :D

Can I see the OOB? And do you use real star systems?

I like to become a Civilian leader of whatever Civilian Ship that had something to do with Construction or Mining...
Let it be named:

All that sounds pretty great, though it's probably going to cause me to rewatch the entire reboot. Anyway,

Watching this carefully. Probably can't participate due to school and two other games I'm involved in, but this looks cool.

In as a freighter captain, if possible. Oscar Wilson, callsign "Hopper", ship name Thermopylae. If you're doing multiple civilian designs, I'd prefer speed and fast cargo transfer over extra cargo capacity.

depending on how much you plan to update this, I could get to hop into a viper, as a lousy wingman with aspirations of becoming a squad leader, someday.
