<Syndicate>: Sequel Preparation - Vote on the Sequel's Location!
« on: September 06, 2012, 08:53:55 pm »

"I ain't scared of you Irish fuckers! I'll drown you in - Bloody hell, there's hundreds of them!"

-Last words of English gang leader Tom "Steelman" Millsworth, (1984-2012)

Welcome to Licheville. Why am I the one saying welcome? You're the one that lived here after all. Anyways, life has taken a major turn downhill for you in the past few years. You know, the economy. Your job, house, family, etc., all to shit for reasons that involve forces beyond you.

So you've taken life into your hands. Not as a criminal, criminals are stupid, most of the time they get cocky and end in the slammer, or some back-alley gutter. But not you, power's in numbers after all. So, with some under-the-table planning, a you and some fellow English people have met at the back of a pub in Licheville to form a gang.

Wait, isn't a gang just a collective of criminals? You're going to need something more sophisticated than that...how about a Syndicate? Well, it's time to take a hold on your life again, and reach places you could only have dreamed of.

"I would rather live a short life of glory than a long one of obscurity"

-Alexander the Great

Gameplay:

Syndicate is the one-and-only (to the best of my knowledge) English Gangster RTD. In England. A group of players, which will at most times consist of 5-8 characters, will head over the Syndicate gang. This means taking care of expansion, fighting, diplomacy and managing resources. The ultimate goal is to control Licheville. And while the goal itself is simple, the path too it is long and complex. The way the Syndicate works is left up to the players to decide.

While starting out small, the Syndicate will gain more members, resources, and influences over time. Also, note that this game will focus more on melee and hand-to-hand combat than firearm shoot-outs. (But not entirely, as you will find the reason below.)

Dice:

The roll system I use will be farily close to the traditional D6 results used in RTD. For an example of an action with each corresponding die number, I will use the opening of a locked door.

0 - Wat: You run into the door, full force, smashing your face into the wooden surface. You fall backwards, dazed.
1 - Abysmal: You jostle the doorknob for a good few minutes, tiring your hand out and no doubt getting the attention of everyone on the other side. Still, it does not open.
2 - Failure: You turn the doorknob. Nope.
3 - Fair: You turn the knob and realize that it's locked.
4 - Good: Turning the doorknob, you realize you're dealing with a locked door. Sacrificing a bobby pin, you manage to open it up and step into the next room.
5 - Great: As you realize the door before you is locked, you take a nearby pen and manage to unlock the door without a sound.
6 - Overshoot: You kick the door, bypassing the lock with sheer muscle and slamming it open.
7 - Woah.: You unlock the door using only your hands and ears, nice.
8+ - ...I don't even: You manage to alter the door lock so that it locks everyone on the other side inside of it.

Experience:

The experience system in this game is simple. You do a specific type of task or action enough times, you gain a level in that skill. Each level you gain, you get an additional 1/5 of a chance of gaining a +1 to your next roll involving that skill. So at level 1 you have a 20% bonus chance, at level 2 you have a 40% chance, and at level 5 you are guaranteed to get a +1 every-time you utilize that skill.

The experience system is dynamic, so getting to level 1 won't take you that long, but for each additional level, it will take exponentially longer and require more training/more skillful utilization of that skill.

Police:

Law enforcement will of course be the bane of any gang, perhaps the biggest issue of any. In relation to game-play, there are a few special notes about the law and police of England. First of all, gun-laws are extremely tight compared to those in the United States. Possessing a firearm, even if it is concealed in your pocket or in the trunk of your car, is enough to get you busted. Of course, being a gangster means you can have guns, it's just that I wouldn't recommend walking around with your assault rifle on you with a bandoleer in a public area. With these laws in place, most law enforcement do not carry firearms. However, a few of them do. And if you get special forces, private guards, or the military sic'd on your ass, you can bet your ass they're carrying heat. So that's your forewarning.

And back on the topic of 'busting', instead of being killed, law enforcement prefers to bring you in alive if you are subdued. The amount and severity of your accusations will change the amount of turns you have locked up in the pen. In court, note that a good lawyer, (or corrupted jury/judge) can get you acquitted. While in prison, you sit around until your sentence is up. If you want to get out quicker, you can attempt escape, or hope someone from the Syndicate will rescue you. If you escape prison, that will be a permanent crime on your record. If sentenced to life, waiting for escape/rescue is the only thing you can do.

There are many ways to deal with the police. Straight up fighting is a very bad idea, especially at first. Note that some police and politicians are corruptible. The police can also be used as a sort of tool, as you can plant/frame/tip off members of rival gangs.

Since I'm American, if any of you Brits want to drop important information about the country, please share. For example, I'm trying to get a good idea of what most modern English architecture is like.

Oh yeah, and some people still need to vote for a gang color.
