Poland-Lithuania VH/VH

Poland is an old idea, and an old kingdom. Like anything old, it has old enmities and problems.

The problems, and enmities, are those of any state surrounded by ambitious rivals, all of whom are looking to become stronger at someone else’s expense. Sweden’s ambitions to create an empire around the Baltic; Tsar Peter’s desires to make Russia a great European power to rival the style of Bourbon France; the Austrians and Prussians each seeking to define a greater Germany and secure their borders; even the distant Ottomans have to be considered, should they ever launch a new assault on Christian Europe. And in the middle of all of this, a Polish-Lithuanian state that is not under the control of a single, strong ruler, a man who can impose his will to defend his people. Instead, Poland is something altogether stranger: a land where the people have a say in government.

That the country has survived at all is a tribute to the spirit of its people.

And yet, these rivalries could be turned to advantage. A Polish leader who picked his alliances carefully, and his wars equally so, could do much to make his country great. The Russians have no divine right to dominate the steppes, or the Swedes to control the Baltic. The various Germans states need allies, the same as other nations, and cannot expect to take anything they want without a struggle. A clever Polish leader could make much of this situation, if he can manage the hopes, expectations and fears of his people at home.

And I have never played Empire: Total War before. I have played Medieval 2 and rome extensively, so I should be able to micro our (high quality) cavalry, but VH/VH should make things much more interesting. Be prepared for devastating losses and hard fought victories. We go forth into the unkown, into the past, into ridiculous AI bonuses. This may well be my Waterloo.

Given my penchant for running crappy LPs I've decided to do the same thing with Empire: Total War, that is I'll play my very first campaign as you, dear viewer, dictate. You will get to choose my faction, the difficulty, and set some medium/long term goals as well. If anyone has any ridiculous ideas that you want to see tried then if they get support we'll do that too.

Advise away! The first poll will be for my faction.

Poland has the win by doubling the next closest, so now we move onto difficulty.

(This is taking so long to start because I just ordered it, it should be in by Friday, but the last time I was told that it took two weeks.)

Furthermore as Poland is a (Glorious) Constitutional Monarchy I will be hiring cabinet ministers. Every update (which should be 5/10 turns long) I will come back with my report and you will get to give your guidance. Positions available:

Minister of the Interior (Dictates construction goals)

Minister of Foreign Affairs (Handles diplomacy)

Minister of the Army (Self Evident)

Minister of the Navy (Self Evident, won't do much unless a war with Sweden starts)

Minister of Whatever (If it makes you feel better for missing out on a better post)

I just remembered! I think you can finally rename units in this one, so if you miss a cabinet position you can grab a unit. I make no guarantees that it own't be massacred though.
