Sorry for the (relatively speaking) long time between posts. The extreme lag (which I think is caused by the third level of the caverns being covered completely in mud) and time it takes to edit together the screenshots then upload/post them delay my posting, but be assured I have been playing constantly since I started the thread.

This level of chambers opens to Hell proper, but there is no way to climb down that way.

There is another opening to the outside on this level (seen to the west), but I cannot get out this way because it is completely surrounded by eerie pits. Still no sign of demons whatsoever besides the previously noted webs.

It appears that this is the end of the demon chambers underneath the demonic fortress where they open up to the ground of Hell. All of them were completely empty (except for the demon in the picture, but I'm certain he just wandered in from Hell). I've come to the conclusion that there are three possibilities as to why the demons were absent from the sword-stealing ambush:
1. The demons do not spawn when an adventurer takes the sword in DF 0.34.11 at all. This can easily be disproved; if any of you have pulled the sword in adventure mode (version 0.34.11 of course) please tell me the results.
2. If you are sneaking when you pull the sword, the demons are not spawned.
3. My world or fortress in particular is bugged so that the demons will not spawn.

I've caught site of my first demon of this adventure. I have no doubt that he is not one of the chamber-dwelling demons, but is simply one of the demons that wanders Hell who has made his way into the bottom-most chamber. He hasn't noticed me due to my ridiculous ambusher skill, so I think I'll leave him be for now because I don't want to muck about with dusts. Even if I could easily kill him, his dusts would probably get me. Also as a side note, its made out of gem which is pretty awesome (but I don't think it's that uncommon among demons, titans, and other randomly genned baddies). I will continue exploring Hell and documenting my adventure if you want.

Don't worry, they didn't effect me at all. I walked right past the demon and was completely unharmed. I am currently exploring Hell. It's actually pretty boring, and it's too dark for me to see much in front of me. It's very likely that even if I were to find the chambers beneath another demonic fortress, I would walk right past them without noticing. That is of course unless you get the "curious structure" message for walking below the demonic fortress.

No, I haven't played Fortress Mode at all in this world. I entered the caverns through an above-ground cave, then explored them for many hours until I found the demonic fortress.

It wasn't luck. Pretty much anybody can replicate what I did if they wander for long enough since all of the caverns are connected.

I ventured down to the south and walked along the perimeters of a few eerie pits. I found no demons or anything interesting, and also I'm a bit scared of getting lost and dying of dehydration, so I returned to the chambers. When I got there, six demons were waiting in a group. Among them were three of the dusty winged devils made of chrysoprase, along with two Scorpion Demons and a White Demon.

That ended poorly and quickly (one turn). I never even got a chance to try out my masterwork adamantine scimitar. I do not call this a failure though; I have uncovered a bug which is potentially extremely lucrative for adventurers. If what I've done can be replicated (taking the adamantine weapon without summoning hordes of angry demons), please let me know. I think sneaking may have something to do with it, as I've never read of anything like this before. But then again, I've never read of anybody in adventure mode pulling the sword at all (although I'm sure it's happened). Anyway, thanks for reading. I'm going to go throw a tantrum over the loss of my dragonslaying, giant cave spider killing, practically invisible, legendary armor using adventurer who I spent nearly a dozen hours playing with.

I have no idea, the whole map was obscured by tons of frozen extract. Something funny though: one of the demons tried to doge the dust and fell down an eerie pit. Unfortunately I didn't get a screen cap because I quit too hastily.
