So, just before the death of my last fortress due to a combination of a goblin seige and a dragon, one of my few surviving dwarves went into a fell mood and made a freaking axe out of dwarf bone. Now, I finally gave up and abandoned when I was down to two nearly suicidal dwarves, but I'd really like to reclaim so a new unwitting dwarf can claim the demon axe for Armok.

Then I read this on the wiki: "Artifacts disappear from the artifact list upon abandoning a fortress."

So, will it just be gone if I try?

It should still be there, but if it's inside a container then you'll never be able to remove it from said container (due to a bug that causes the container/contained references to get corrupted).
