Astro Galaxy: New space exploration 4X browser game
« on: October 04, 2012, 09:14:07 pm »

I've just recently finished my new game, it's a realistic space exploration game. You can play it from the browser, and you actually able to explore our Sol system and then go out and explore Alpha Centauri and the local stars group and beyond.

The game is at: www.astro-galaxy.com

I'm sure we'll develop a means to explore other stars in a timely manner soon enough, but until then, we use what we can, that is our imagination :)
The game is about space exploration, but it's also multiplayer and you can design your ships, trade and do all the fun combat things :)

More images on the game page.

This is an image of how the game renders our Solar system:

Sirius: 8.6 Light Years from Sol->Earth

Blue giant and White dwarf binary star system.
Your ship detects an ocean environment planet and sets a course to it.

Ship docked with SOL shipyard

Upgrade ship hull, buy new ships and orbital stations at the SOL corporation shipyard.

The name makes it sound like yet another of the endless Ogame clones.

Well you won't know until you see it hehe. For the record, I don't like Ogame and the likes where you upgrade your buildings endlessly... I like to explore, see new things, colonize, that sort of thing...

Though the advertisement, the main webpage of the website, and even the beginning of the game weren't very impressive, I decided to give this a fair chance, since I love Astronomy.

I've played this for about 3 hours, working my way through the tutorial and up to interstellar travel. I'd like to say, for my impression so far, this is better than it looks, especially if you enjoy learning about space. The premise of the game is to explore other solar systems, set up mining operations, and bring the resources back to Earth. You can have multiple ships, stations, and mining operations under your command. You can also PvP, by raiding other player's ships, stations, and mining ops. Corporations can be formed for unified interests, and I assume eventually corporations could own territory, attacking anyone who enters that does not belong. I'll split up the rest of my thoughts into the good and the bad.

Spoiler: The Good (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: The Bad (click to show/hide)

Anyway, if I continue to enjoy this, I'll probably make a B12 Corp at some point. Good job with this. I really do enjoy the exploration feel of it and the information provided.

It's an interesting concept, but the pace is a bit slow... yes, I know space is big and slow makes sense, but it does detract from the fact that it's a game.

I decided to give it a try, and hit a bit of a snag. Jump to next system - nearly 11 hours. Ouch haha. Guess I'll pick it up tomorrow.

It does seem to be very "pay to win" though, just looking at it. Someone who spends real money can: Buy research points, buy in game money, and cut the time down on both manufacturing and travel. So basically if someone wanted to throw down a few hundred bucks they could go from complete newbie to super ship pretty much instantly. Just buy research until they got all the stuff teched up really high, buy money until they have enough to get the biggest ship and buy materials for all the high end components that they just researched, then buy time so that all the manufacturing finishes instantly.

Judging by how slow it is to get things done in normal play (just traveling to the next system for a 10,000 credit mission takes 11 hours, then whatever time it takes to get to the in-system planet, then 11 hours back) it would probably take months to catch up to someone who spent even a little cash on the game. It might improve as you advance, but right now it looks like it'll take me at least a day to get there and complete this 10k credit mission and probably another day to get back, where someone donating $1 could have 100k credits instantly.

Oh, I missed turning Quantum Points into money. It is a little ridiculous.

Yes, your whole "-Pay to win doesn't seem to be a problem." thing is the reason I decided to try the game. Wouldn't have bothered had I known that was completely untrue. It's all your fault Orb, all your fault. Your oversight caused me to play a pay to win game. You have failed me and brought shame upon your family.  :P

In all seriousness though, I really like the concept of the game. If not for it being pay to win I could see myself playing it. As-is, I don't see it as more than a passing distraction. Shame, since there aren't a whole lot of games like it.
