Sea Biome
« on: October 07, 2012, 02:57:47 pm »

Hi. I'm starting to have a sea biome fortress. I want to know what I should bring with me, and also the type of dwarf to bring. Also on a vaguely related note I hear mermaid bones are valuable. What type of sea biome do mermaids appear in and can they be bred? Thank you.

The mother, because the child was closest, grabbed one of his arms and started breaking it slowly, twisting it around - probably laughing maniacally. When the arm was broken, she went for the legs and the ribs. During this the child punched and kicked her in retaliation. But after both legs were broken...

Mermaid bones are now 1 value, probably because of the things people were doing to get at those valuable bones and skulls.

As for the ocean biome... There's no job in particular you need to bring. Ocean biomes tend to be bordered by areas with aquifers, so if that's the case you should bring some extra stone or wood (if there aren't many trees on-site).

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

Bring along a fisherman and build a fortress over the ocean. Bonus points for building underwater.

Thanks. Sorry to hear that their value has gone down :/ Still I would like to know if they can be bred and captured just for the pure epic and Dwarfiness of having my own mermaid farm :D Also I would like to know in which type of sea to find them

You can find them in good ocean biomes, and while you can catch them they can't be tamed.

Nor can they be butchered, due to having [CAN_LEARN].

The new mermaid far is instead a sea serpent farm.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

wow. The serpent farm looks complex, unlikely to even work and the profits unsure.....I like it!

To my knowledge it no longer works because sea serpents lay eggs, and won't claim a nest box if it's underwater.

Yeah, you'll have to go to an evil ocean biome though

Don't really know if they can be bred. They have the child tags, but they seem to lack child size definition.
Also, in savage oceans you might encounter giant forms of ocean wildlife, which can be pretty massive (up to 200ton giant sperm whale)

How do you tell if animals can reproduce? Because I really want a sea monster farm. I just genned a world wherein all of the oceans are evil-aligned.
