Has anyone managed to make anything out of pig iron?  Or found a way to make steel?

Got Iron sword and shield done and the game suddenly got a lot easier. What to do when you no longer have to worry about survival?

Build a huge house.
Then disassemble it for transport to the new world any time you need to quit.

I've noticed Thistles are a pretty damn good food source. They don't reduce hunger too much but they heal you a fair bit too. If you plant them they'll spread fast so it doesn't really matter if you need to eat a few.

Once you're all decked out you go exploring looking for treasures. Apparently there IS a win condition, although it's fairly ramshackle and hard to do as of now, because it's not complete, strictly speaking. So maybe go looking for that. :P

I've been playing this game for the last few days. This game truly is a gem.

So far I've only managed to get to roughly 20,000 points before dying in bad spots. I found the best way to survive is to find an enclave on the side of a mountain and build your base from there. Another thing I've found which is a life-saver is that seaweed can be used to make string, which saves a ton of time gathering branches.

Yeah, string is a huge bottleneck and luckily the developer has acknowledged this and will likely be adding more "string" bits. You can also dig in bogs (dark green) for peat and sometimes vines, which also count as string, if you don't wanna hunt down a tree.

update: it seems like there actually is an endgame.
and a helpful tool i found, the grindstone. just place any object on the ground that has a durability factor and double click the grindstone while facing it. this restores the object to full durability for the cost of 1 maximum durability. you can even repair grindstones using grindstones.

Yep, there's even a win condition. It's related to finding a lot of treasure but it isn't only that. That's all I'll say. It's fairly logical.

I'm finding that string becomes less of a bottleneck at high (30+%) skill levels. Instead Tree bark becomes much more rare.

Huzzah! After three days, i finally beat the game. I found that literally picking up everything you own and refreshing for a new world to be interesting. inventory management was a bit of a bother. well, chest-inventory management.

final score: 260,000
total turns: 81,600
total talent: 51,000

Been trying it on one world.  Unless that "one world" happens to be a desert with sandstone.  Can't do much without rocks and trees!

okay, I have 5 rock-like items and a fuel-like item (twigs, kindlings) but I can't make a campfire.
Why could that be?

Those are fuel, not fuel like items, fuel-like items are things such as logs and charcoal IIRC
