Will real books ever be a part?
« on: November 02, 2012, 11:29:14 am »

I'm curious, does Toady ever plan to include real books, with stories you can read? And if not that, books with a big description of the plot ?

What purpose would they have?

In fortress mode, dwarves could relax on break and read these as opposed to socializing?  Some dorfs are introverted, after all.

In adventure mode, one could learn about history through these books?  Or learn skills via a book?

Would the dorfs see a benefit from them, or is it simply for the player's enjoyment?

I think those's already in as part of necromancer's writing obsession. Would be interesting to see scribes existing in fortress mode for players, though.

Books are definitely planned to be expanded.
See here:
Quote
Writing

    Phrase storage and grammar updates
Have books around that can contain maps/locations/names/traps/purpose/artifacts of older sites
Sometimes you might just have a name and know an artifact is there, and then be able to cross-reference that in the next source you find until you feel you are prepared
Some sites might contain additional tomes/tablets/inscriptions that lead to more information

And here (somewhat outdated):

Quote
LANGUAGE ARC: The in-game languages need a better framework, as many simple name formulations are impossible in the current system, and it wouldn't hurt to add a basic grammar and phonetics at this time as well. In addition, paper, engraved writing, books, poems, songs, etc. could all be explored in the different game modes in various ways. Related to Core97, Core98, Core99 and Core100.

Core100, NEW LANGUAGE ITEMS, (Future): Parchment, vellum and their buddies then books, songs, poems... all for your entertainment (and horror, if there are random poems). Requires Core99.

Bloat185, LIBRARIES, (Future): Books and libraries utilizing histories. Once these are in, people that you chat with don't need to know as much. You can find legends here that reveal locations of ruins made by world gen, or your dwarf games. Various other books are possible.

PowerGoal46, THE GIANT ASS BOOK, (Future): You go to a dwarf fortress and see a giant unliftable tome filled with maps of the Underworld. You sketch a copy and depart.

PowerGoal106, BOOK LEARNIN', (Future): Your master doesn't have time for you and has you read his book instead. You misunderstand the book and think the book is easy when it is actually advanced, and you tell your master you have learned what the book has to teach. Your master is upset and orders you to perform various menial tasks.

Among other sources.

For that matter:

Urist McBonecrafter has been estatic lately. He has read a good book lately.  He has been enthralled by a public debate lately.  He has seen his fort win a war lately.  Nobody has died recently.  He saw a rabbit recently.

And maybe the dwarves write about deities and other dwarf read this book it becomes a follower of this deity. Maybe the Sir Urist McNewton legendary+5 mechanic write Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica and every novice mechanic need to read this book. Put children in the school so they have history, geography, biology, and math books. Beware of followers that will burn all books not religious!

There will come a time when Dwarf Fortress starts randomly generating its own novels, and it will be glorious. It's already got a start with legends mode.

If this happens, the entire forum may leave the economy of book-buying, because they have an infinite number of free books at their disposal.

I would laugh if someone made a mod, and the world created by the mod wound up with a book that explained the laws of physics to a person so that even a jr high student could understand it, while keeping the same meaning.

Tell me two rocks that appear in a sedimentary layer.
Tell mf four types of alloy.
I think we all learned in more df than in any geology class.

Then someone will start publishing the books written in the game (and the people who don't play it will buy it):
