Having trouble with Avater
« on: November 11, 2012, 03:39:02 pm »

So, I joined this fourm some time ago, and recently I've become intrested in acquiring my own avatar. However, for some reason, I can't seem to set one up. Can someone please explain to me how I'm supposed to link a picture?

I apologize in advance if this is in the wrong fourm. I tried the search function, but all I got was a whole bunch of stuff from the role-playing sections.

Find a picture.
Save it to your computer.
Go to http://imgur.com/
On the upper left, it will say "Upload Images".
Click "Computer". This will bring up a browse your computer menu.
Find your picture from before. Click it. Click OK.
You will now get a popup screen saying Upload Images.
Click "Start Upload". This will upload the picture and then redirect you.
Click the picture. This will take you to a page with just that picture.
Copy the URL of that page with just the picture.
Come back to this thread.
Click your user name in this thread.
Mouse over Modify Profile in the page that comes up.
Go to Forum Profile.
Click it.
There will be a heading called "Personalized Picture". Go there and click "Specify avatar by URL".
Paste the link you got from the page with just the picture there.
Scroll down to the very bottom of the page.
On the lower right, click Change Profile.
You're done.

Alternatively, you could just find a link to the image itself and put it in the line labelled "Specify Avatar by URL" in your account settings. Much easier.
And when I say "a link to this image itself," I mean something like this.
It only works if you can find the image you want online. Google helps. My avatar, for example, is a picture of Solid Snake that I found on a wiki.
Go to the address for the image. Copy. Paste. Snake now lives in Bay12.

That's hotlinking and is generally frowned upon.  Unless it's already on an image host you should take the time to move it to one (and maybe resize/ crop it).

Its on an image host, but I originally discovered it on the wiki. Uploading your own image might be easier if you don't feel like digging. Like I said, its only an alternative.

Still valid avatar advice in this thread.

I would only add that you might have to change the URL link from https://whatever.jpg to http://whatever.jpg for it to work

Not only is this thread 7 years old, the OP still doesn't have an Avater (sic).

I failed dozens of times before I found this thread.  I'm not quite sure what an avater is, so maybe the OP was after something else.  Or maybe the avatar link expired.
