I found Dwarf Fortress from Davidr64yt on youtube, someone mentioned Dwarf Fortress, and being bored I looked it up, and was amazed. I started playing back in 2011, and joined the forums a few months ago. From there, I found Jefmajor on youtube, Grimith and other awesome people, such as all of you and all your creativity. I love this place, and I love dwarf fortress.

TVTropes... every other page I visited there led to Dwarf Fortress, and after a long time of "I DON'T CARE ABOUT LAME GENERIC FANTASY CRAP LEAVE ME ALONE RAWR' I finally caved in and realized it was anything but. Best decision ever.

There've been threads like this a few times, but I'll say it again:

Boatmurdered (the one and only)

At least that's what got me playing... I may have read about that "incredibly complex and awesome game" before, but trying it myself can be attributed 100% to Boatmurdered. Later on there was Nist Akath the inspired me to really dive into it. So, basically the will to experience awesome stories.

I'm mildly surprised that TVtropes is that important... I didn't know that it got so many pages about DF. And I don't dare to enter that site ever again.

I honestly don't remember. I remember stumbling across it a long time ago (2D!) and not understanding it at all, and just kinda tossed it aside as 'stupid crap'. Then a few years later I was searching for good roguelikes, and found DF once again. I felt like it seemed familiar, and I thought about my horrid experience with the old 2D version, but gave it a go anyway. By that point, it was fully in 3D. Adventure Mode hooked me in, but I've entertained myself with Fortress mode a few times since.

Years ago, I thought to myself, "I'm going to learn how to play roguelikes," because I've always valued gameplay over graphics. Such games are bound to be found in the genre known for being rendered entirely in ASCII. So I poked through lists of roguelikes until I stumbled upon Dwarf Fortress.

It turns out Dwarf Fortress is the game I always subconsciously wished for, but never knew I wanted. Even when I play other games, I still consider myself to be merely filling time, or perhaps recharging my interest, between Dwarf Fortresses; including spans when I don't open the game itself for months. I have for years checked the dev page and forums here at least 2-3 times a week, as reading about others' strategies and experiences is a large part of my enjoyment of the game.

Someone linked to the Boatmurdered reports in another board i used to browse, found it rather funny and decided to give a try to that game (it was still the 2d version, though the release of the version introducing the z level wasn't too far).

Was completely overwhelmed by the interface and having no idea what to do, i started to read the old wiki that featured some tutorials and got me started more properly.

I think Boatmurdered really did a great job at making people curious enough to try DF.
