Benevuto had a concern of a similar nature, so he took the opportunity to interject. "If there's every any down time, could I go do some business? Check on my stocks, et cetera? "

I doubt we will have much spare time, but if it we do and you can access your business without leaving the embassy, then feel free to do so, Benevuto. As for you, Musha, I will ask you to refrain from attempting anything against a criminal you find, unless he is also guilty of crimes under Andaric jurisdiction, in which case I recommend you inform the local authorities of his location. If he is innocent of crimes in Andaric worlds, then leave him alone. You are now part of an Andaric embassy and as such are expected to carry out the needs of the Empire, not of your own nation, for the duration of the mission.

Talos gave another look around the room.

Will that be all?

The meeting adjourns just in time for the rumbling of the engines to peak.  For a moment everything, every surface and object, is traceried with shimmering blue light.  A moment later you are plunged into utter darkness.

You know, of course, that the darkness lasts for less than a fraction of a second.  You know it does.  But why does it always feel like an eternity?  You won't remember.  You never remember.  You never remember seeing them in the dark, either.  Only when you're here.

The moment passes and you find yourself back in the meeting room, everything exactly as it was before.  The only difference is that you can see a different jump station out of the window.  It rotates smoothly in space, apparently untroubled save for the lack of shimmering blue in the centre of its ring.  The sound of the engines dissipates as the silent conventional drive takes over and gently nudges the ship toward a docking port on the ring.



Docking goes smoothly and you are met at the airlock by a detachment the jumpgate security team and the station commander, Commander Olasan, an Andar in a smooth white jumpsuit with golden epaulets.  The security team dress similarly in grey jumpsuits that do little to conceal the low-profile body armour beneath the suits, or the security batons at their hips.

Commander Olasan bows his head to Ambassador Asdatan.

Welcome aboard, Ambassador, he says.  I'm glad of your arrival, our chief engineer is incapacitated from a food allergy and stuck in sickbay.  The brigade will certainly come in useful, we're still tackling the problem.  Will you accompany me to my suite?  We can talk there.

The Commander gestures, clearly intending it for the Ambassador and Benevuto.  The rest of you split apart and take in the spaceport; clean and somewhat spartan.  Standard grey hullmetal walls make up most of the spaceport area, unlike the busy commercial ports.  You suppose most ships don't stop at the jumpgate station except for quick resupplies and fuel.  There are a handful of shops, mostly run by andars or humans, although one of them is a novelty and gift shop run by a kersh.  The shops are the only decorated part of the port, and they are all very garishly coloured in a style that went out of fashion on Kalador about twenty years ago.

A pair of security guards remain behind, offering in their soundless voices to show the rest of you to the engineering bay if the embassy wishes to inspect it, or to other areas of the station if required; sickbay, the recreation deck, habitation quarters or the industrial quarter.

Eyu eyed the shopfronts suspiciously. There was probably no shaking the guards now - better to go along with them. It would be interesting to see how the great machines powering the station functioned, in any case.

Go along with the guards, keep eyes open for anything interesting on the way.

"Of course." Benevuto bowed and thumped his fist against his chest, a sign of respect in the Republic, and tipped his head a little. He did not bow, of course, as it was against the rules of the Republic to bow in deference to any foreigners.

The pair of you are escorted to an office with a bay window of plasteel overlooking the rim of the jumpgate; it stretches out before you like an enormous zero-ball pitch.  The office is done up in whites and creams, with a rosewood desk with a cream leather surface and matching computer and chair.  The commander gestures to a pair of cream leather armchairs and takes a seat at his desk.  The guards take up positions outside the doors.  Once you are settled, he speaks.

I imagine your first question will be; was it sabotage?  I'm afraid I honestly can't be sure.  Nothing so obvious as a bomb, at least, and our system scans haven't turned up any viruses.  If it is sabotage, it's been done by someone who knows the layout very well, well enough to disable at least one piece of machinery so we can't find the damage automatically.  We've had our engineers combing the hardware for signs of the fault, but it should go faster with your boys in place.  It's been nineteen hours since the gate cut off without warning, and we've done about half of the engines so far.

Ideally, I'd have the chief engineer brief you, but he nearly choked to death and is still in critical condition in sickbay.  Some idiot mixed up the orders at the soup stand on the rec deck and put greenspike in his soup.  Nothing wrong with it, I like it in soup myself, but turns out it's nearly fatal for him.  His hands swelled up about thirty seconds later, and the rest of his body followed suit.  We were able to stabilise him, but he's not woken up yet and I'm not sure he's in any state to talk.

We can arrange interviews with station personnel if you like, but that will take quite a while to complete.  I can bring in any key staff you like at short notice, though.  I'll also do my best to answer any questions you have.


The commander leans back, ready to answer any questions you have.

[Perception: 5+2] As the three of you follow the pair of guards down to engineering, you can't help but notice the looks some of the station residents give you as you pass.  At first you put it down to your alien appearance, but you get the sensation that these people are on edge somehow, and every single one of them is a kersh.

Engineering is a complicated mess of machinery, so you are led to the control box.  Unlike the largely andar-dominated spaceport, nearly half the engineers and workers here are kersh.  The acting chief engineer is an andar, though, and you find him in the box being assisted by a handful of kersh.  He is busy checking a computing tablet when you arrive.

Yes, what? he snaps, then seems to realise who you are.  Oh!  Please accept my apologies, I thought it was another of those bloody ra- the service crew, I should say.  Pel!  The engineer snaps his fingers at one of the kersh, who jumps slightly at his name.  Go fetch our guests some of that vile drink you favour so much.  Coffee, or whatever it is.  The kersh nods quickly and scurries away in search of a coffee machine.  Honestly, I don't trust anything you can't drink through your fingers, but that's just me.  How can I help you?

I don't mean to suggest you have a traitor amongst your ranks, but from my line of work it pays" He chuckled silently at his incidental pun "to consider all angles. Who do you think, Commander, benefits from this? And a corollary to that question, do the Inaba allow you military access through their gates?" He leaned slight to his right, bringing his hand up to his chin in an inquisitive fashion.

'I presume you are in charge? Assist us in our work and do not attempt to interfere,' Eyu added. 'Now, what can you tell us about the gate? I would appreciate if you provided us with schematics of the gate and records from the time of the incident.'

The Envoy looked around for the Kersh, but the creature was nowhere to be seen. Shame - he didn't like the stares his ilk were giving him, and wondered if it had something do with the communique's contents. No doubt Krell could get better results than him. He would have to bring it up later, discreetly.
