Advice for touring China?
« on: January 09, 2013, 01:44:19 pm »

Not that i can afford it (i would like too), but some of my fellows are (including the wall i think) and given Redking's (much fevered and worshipful) existence, i thought you might be able to tell me how to tell them how the natives are swearing at them and the like. To be fair, they are westerners with the inherent political capital and trips have gone smoothly before in less then perfect country's so hopefully the people organizing it know what they're doing, but even so and for my own benefit fill me in.

Why would you want to go to China?

Who's it being organized through? Most professional organizations that do this sort of thing for a living know how to take care of/shield tourists from most problems.

Also, what specifically are you looking for? Places to go? Things to see? Things not to see/eat/do?
If they're on an organized tour, their itinerary is 90% set already. If they're just freelancing it, THEN it gets interesting.

Organized, academic. Before we go any further, is there a way to delete threads? Paranoid ho.

If it's organized and academic, then like I said, 90% of their itinerary is already set. Academic is better than "tourism", hopefully they'll get stuck in less laowai-traps. (Our university contracted a local company to arrange our day trip to Shanghai. REALLY bad touristy trap stuff. Thankfully, we knew a guy who knew a guy who knew a guy, used that as our excuse to ditch the main group, and had a freakin' awesome day in Shanghai, meeting both natives and ex-pats who had learned how to swim in the sea of chaos that is private enterprise in China.

Any idea where they'll be?

Cool. Cause asking for "hey, advice for visiting China" is a little like asking "Hey, any advice while visiting America?"  :P

If you want the thread deleted, you'll have to ask Toady. He's generally cool about such things though.

I have no other advice to contribute though :P
