So this is what happens when you forget to pause... Fascinating.

Or is it that the top of the volcano was actually a z-level above the ocean?

I think you might have just won Dwarf Fortress.

So to recap, one minute everything was going just great, and the next we have caverns collapsing, firebreathing cave beasts, underground brush fires, a screaming swarm of poltergheists back for revenge, zombies in the corridors, drunken brawls in the dining halls, magma pouring into the caverns, rotting miasma everywhere, insanity, madness, and a flying crocodile heading right towards us!

Forget bringing the dwarves to the magma sea

You just brought the magma sea to the dwarves.

A tendon in the skull has been torn!
The Raven has been knocked unconcious!

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

I think you might have just won Dwarf Fortress.

Actually this is the problem now! There's almost no way to lose anymore so I need to rack my brain and come up with a good way for this fort to meet its epic end.

I have a theory of what happened...by collapsing the floor into the magma pipe that had been building pressure for that entire time, i don't believe the pressure decreased on its own in a confined environment, so when you suddenly released it...

or it could just be the floor fell so far that ALL the magma flowed up too fast.
