How do I keep my Murder Dungeon off limits?
« on: January 24, 2013, 12:14:38 pm »

I have a mass pitting (raven/goblin trap hallway) system set up, but my dwarves keep going in to clean while there are still goblins that haven't gotten through yet. Any ideas on how to keep them out until it's empty?

Or use burrows.

I will run the experiment to completion anyway, however. Even if the only reason why there is a punctured equilibrium in the fortress is because I have been brutally butchering babies
EDIT: I just remembered that dwarves can't equip halberds. That might explain why the squads that use them always die.

burrows are easier.

Draw a burrow over the fortress, then delete the areas you dont want dwarves to be, then assign everyone to it, then activate the burrow.

Are they cleaning weapon traps or are they "cleaning" by picking up weapons and corpses, or are they doing the job where they clean blood?

You can prevent the first two pretty well by forbidding the trap "buildings" and bodies with 'd'esignate -> 'f'orbid, which makes your fortress citizens ignore the items you draw over.

Burrows will be iffy if you want dwarves, say, bringing the cages to the area, whereas turning off cleaning will make for a messy fort.

Instead of turning off cleaning, make the Murder Dungeon count as outside (cut away stone so sunlight hits it once: hereafter, that area is outside even if you then build 10 layers of ceilings over it), then set cleaning to inside only via the (o)rder menu.

Use zones: designate the dungeon proper restricted, the work areas around it low, and the paths around it high, should keep most dwarves out
