Puzzle Fortress -- Challengers Needed
« on: February 06, 2013, 11:45:38 pm »

Behold, the Puzzle Fortress!

No one knows what drove the dwarves from their mountain home to the barren mountainside of Luslemmomuz; perhaps it was a collective madness that led them to construct their mind-bending mazes and deathtraps. All we know is that where there are Puzzling Crypts there will be adventurers that long to seek the treasures within.

This is a community game with a difference: you play adventurers who seek to crack an impenetrable fortress full of puzzles. The challenge is mostly cerebral: a cunning adventurer will be under absolutely no danger. The foolhardy adventurer will be dead.

The fortress is called The Puzzling Crypts, and has three challenges that must be overcome, each more difficult than the last. Your challenge is to journey into the heart of the fortress, to the copper-floored room. Here you must pull the silver lever, take any treasure that can be found, and escape to the nearest village alive (if not necessarily in one piece).

Everyone plays the same save, posting in the thread stories of their attempts. Pictures are great! Logical analysis is good too. Loading the game in fortress mode isn't allowed: adventurers only okay!

Whoever cracks the fortress, and safely retires their adventurer (with a save and pictures to prove it) becomes the new Riddle Master, and may create a new puzzle fortress or reclaim and improve the old one.

Here is the save: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=7381.

Are you dwarf enough to accept this challenge?

I'm going to do my very best not to simply reclaim it in Fortress Mode... but I really like cheating.

Urist Brokenmind steps ahead. Danger is nothing when there is something to win.

Do I need to disable trapavoid?
Does the fortress reset itself?

What is this I see before my eyes? A challenge? *Strokes chin*

You are on, my dear sir! I shall relentlessly throw adventurers at this deathtrap until its gears are clogged with the bones of the fallen!

Tempted with stories of riches, Brokenmind the adventurer travels to an ancient dwarf fortress.

After finding the secret entrance to a laberint, I reached a room with three levers. one of the levers had less mechanism than the others,
and i pulled it.

I crossed a room full of traps and reached the fabled copper room.

I pulled the silver lever. Then, the south floodgate opened to magma, while the weast one showed another pasage with a coffer.

Well, the coffer was empty.

I reached the surface again and killed all the dwarfs.

Only after I've finished  the challenge I've noticed you doesn't need the observer skill to successfully navigate through the trap room. Nice detail.  :)

To answer Objective- you'll want traps enabled for adventure-mode (it is now by default). The fortress doesn't reset itself exactly, but it is possible to manually reset it by retracing your steps etc.

Freshman, there's a map in the first post of this thread.

Psychomantis, congrats on getting so far. But did you return safely to town with some treasure?

Ahaha, i had totally overprepared and failed to notice i had already reached the copper-floor room. I wondered how to unlock the other floodgates - there was at least one that looked like it was going somewhere not magma. And the copper didn't look much different from the basalt floor. So i once magmad myself the obvious way and locked myself in with magma by leaving a gate open for too long.

Knowing there was no need to fuck around more than that, i started another adventurer and went straight to the fortress. Went in, grabbed the chest and some silty clay loam, then roamed the place and picked up some more stuff before returning to Lizardtone, the home town of my (human) civ. Hmm, build up and take on the local lawgiver? As long as i can avoid its fire, it should be doable...

Anyway - my loot:
-basalt coffer-
Contents:
  silty clay loam
  iron anvil
  silver bars
  cat corpse
  prepared one-humped camel eye [2]
  pig tail fibre thread
Equipment:
+giant gila monster bone crown+ - head
porcupine leather quiver - body
(contains three solitary silver bolts)

I'm gonna try and give this a go. However, I'm going to pass up on becoming a Riddle Master, if you don't mind.

That's fine, Flameboy. Good luck!

Larix, do you want to take the mantle of Riddle Master? If I don't hear back from you or any other challengers in a few days, I'll conclude that the first challenge WASN'T CHALLENGING ENOUGH and implement another TWO levels of deadly puzzles in the Puzzle Fortress.

No pics, sorry

My name is Karnii Puzzlebrand. I am a human, of Omon Duqueh.
I've grown weary of a simple life as a worker. I've been working on
skills, growing stronger, and more enduring. I've decided to set out
to an old, abandoned fortress called "PuzzleCrypts". I'm just about
to set out from my home town of Cosmosadore. It will be quite a trek
, but one I believe I can survive. I have  taken a bundle of 30
fisherberries, as well as a small knife for throwing. Though this will
slow me down, dieing will do that much more effectively.
It has been one day since I set out. I have stopped in
Trimblushed, another small hamlet, just after dusk. I have slept, and
eaten. I shall soon set out again.
I've discovered a tomb. It would be best not to disturb it; a
curse is a bad thing to have when embarking on a journey such as this.
A goblin ambushed me. He was a lone hammergoblin, and he
quickly died after I got off a good shot to the forehead and pierced
a major artery. I have sustained no injuries, outside of some minor
bruises.
Success! I have gotten to the fortress! After helping the
resident dwarves kill a goblin thief, I pulled a lever and entered a
labyrinth. After wandering around for a while, I found myself in a
room with three levers. I pulled one at random, and a wall in front
of it opened. Taking a step in, a large chunk of granite fell on me,
which I luckily dodged, only to have a sword come up just in front of
me, thankfully missing by an inch. As I backed up in surprise, a large
, spiked ball hit me in the back. I felt it pierce through my heart.
Here I lay now, using my lest breaths to write here. Should you find
this journal, turn back. If you are persistent, and have not yet
passed the lever trial, remember to pull the *Blood stain*
