The Borowitz Report is sort of a crappy, partisan Onion.

It's tonight, apparently. I don't know why they did it on Mardi Gras when a very low amount of people will be watching.

State of the Union Address is go. Live on Youtube if you don't have TV, so go watch it.

EDIT: Obama pronounced dollar "dollah". I am amused by that alone because I'm easily amused.

He addressed climate change, thank god. Not too badly either, pointing out all the freak weather makes it kind of hard to ignore the point.

And...that's it! I liked it, heavy though it was on vapid buzzwords. Ted Nugent didn't shoot him during the proceedings, though, so that's a plus.

In other news: moves are afoot to throw out section 5 of the Voting Rights Act. What could possibly go wrong?

Slightly less than you think? I mean, it discriminates against states, doesn't it? :P

In all seriousness, this seems pretty tame compared to certain... other actions of late, though I imagine messing with the Voting Rights Act takes some guts.

Still not a good thing by any stretch of the imagination. But it's not really a cliff of evilness. More of a slippery slope, IMO.

Now back to your scheduled discussions.

VAWA has some really odd provisions in it, though. For example, it makes raising your voice at your wife fall under prosecutable "domestic violence", it doesn't require any evidence for accusations, and if a woman lies during the prosecution it isn't considered perjury. Oh, and it only applies to women, so it's sexist too.
I'm going to assume you're joking about all the other stuff, but I will point out, since it seems to be a common misconception, that nothing in the language of the VAWA or its reauthorization suggests that its provisions will apply only to women.

Google suggests some viability for the first claim, but nothing really credible.

It's a fabrication. The idea is that it will expand domestic violence to include "emotional distress" but if you search the bill for distress (not even just emotional distress) it only comes up under anti-interstate stalking provisions. And causing emotional distress is pretty inherent to the definition of stalking.

Apparently dhokarena56 is going to change his name to FearfulJesuit, hence the name change.
It was rather confusing for me the first time I saw the new name too.

That's the idea, yes, Toady's approved it so I'm just waiting for the paperwork to be pushed through.

A Georgia state senator's timely call for...hammer control. Or something. Man, what is it with Georgia?

I'm pretty sure my state's senators are kinda crazy. Then again, we're Georgia.

He is misunderstanding/misrepresenting the statistics.

There ARE more people murdered each year with blunt objects than are murdered with "Assault Weapons". But that is not the case when you expand that to include all guns.
