I'm pretty sure most women don't recognize Palin as someone of their sex.

My bets are they pick some unheard of latino/hispanic republican for VP so they can try to improve their standing with hispanic/latinos and collect the whole 2 votes that's going to swing, I mean, it didn't work with the Palin attempt to collect female votes, but I'm not sure these guys have learned yet.
For the record, the PRRI put together an infographic from their research which suggests that the GOP has already lost the Hispanic vote. There's also one which says that the link between the Tea Party and Religious Right is much stronger than the one between the Tea Party and the Libertarians.

And while I'm at it, here's a stacked line chart for religion in America today.

I don't know...remember, Bush II headlined the "compassionate conservatism" movement back in 2000, before shit went down and he ended up a war president. I don't think another Bush would necessarily be any worse on foreign policy than any other warhawk, and the GOP has a lot of those- I mean, really, do any of us think Rubio would be any better?

That doesn't mean he'd be a good choice, mind you. Just that he's not going to do any worse than a lot of the rest of his caucus.

Don't think anybody's debating how bad he'd really be... I'd just be surprised if anyone from the Bush family had any chance of being elected after George W.  Especially Jeb, after the whole thing with the 2000 election in Florida.

Though I have a strong tendency to overestimate the general public's political memory.

I really, really want to see a modern Republican talk about Lincoln. What's that? A civil rights radical who fiercely opposed states' rights?

But no, they always talk about Regan like he was something other than a cowboy actor who was good at wearing a suit.

They do talk about him, but only as "proof" that the Democrats are the Party of Racism and so all black people should vote Republican.

Needs more agnostic crypto-Catholics.

Catholics are pretty tribal, like jews but less so.  So while you see a lot of atheist jews, you see a lot of lapsed agnostic catholics who will describe themselves as just agnostic but still carry a lot of catholic baggage.  Look at the difference between the white catholic slices in the 18-26 and 50-64 groups, a substantial minority of that is the falling white share of the population but a lot of that is people who's parents raised them catholics but dont practice.

I know, I'm one of those - but 'crypto' would mean 'practicing in secret', wouldn't it?

That's one meaning but not the only one.  They could be someone who says they're agnostic but holds catholic beliefs they dont talk about.

I like the pageantry of the catholic church. I like the architecture of the cathedrals, especially since most of the old world ones have motifs ranging from Romanesque all the way to High Gothic, a few go to baroque and rococco though. I also love the history, who doesn't like to read about Charlemagne, Barbarossa, or the crusades? Nothing in protestant, baptist

or any of the other strands of modern christianity are even half as interesting. The Orthodox church is quite interesting on the other-hand. Reading about the Varangian Guard defending the Emperor is great. They also have some really amazing Icons, it's a shame they fell to the Ottomans.
