Holy hell. I was idly looking in to what the economic impact of losing cali would be, when I came across this page and... what in the blue hell are we doing down here in florida? We're somehow spending somewhere over four times the amount of federal taxes we're paying and spending the most taxes of any state, by nearly double the next highest (Texas).

Also a moment of appreciation for Illinois, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, California, Massachusetts, Indiana, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Delaware, Nebraska, Connecticut, Colorado, Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Utah, Rhode Island, Missouri, and freaking Wyoming, the twenty states that were a net gain for the United State federal budget in 2012. Everyone else: You sucked in 2012. You were outperformed by goddamn Wyoming. Hang your head in shame.

I have now learned that it's probably Florida that needs to sink into the depths. Doing so a couple of years ago would have apparently reduced the federal (E:State related) spending deficit by something close to 90%, which is completely ridiculous.

I've been complaining about this for a while. Alot of the southern states in fact are incredibly big money drains. Which are then invariably filled with people who complain about the big bad federal government.

Well, it might not be long before Florida sinks into the sea. Geologically, it's not optimally placed to deal with any kind of heavy weather/ sea level rise.

It's misleading: Florida gets tons of Social Security and Medicare payments because it's a giant dong-shaped retirement house. :p

This was annoying to find. Took a bit to get a breakdown by percentage, by state. Same year, even, which is nice. Raw population numbers might be more useful (to get a breakdown of spending per old person), but that would take more effort >_>

See, the thing I'd note as re: WTH is going on, is that Montana has almost the exact same demographics (it's even got less young people!), but better than 40% less net deficit. And the trend continues -- by all rights, something more than just "there's a lot of old people" is going on. Unless spending on the elderly has some sort of threshold point where it suddenly balloons like mad, the demographic difference just doesn't seem to really support that much of a discrepancy.

And hell, Texas has one of the youngest populations, and yet has the second highest total spending (though in its favor, a comparatively low net deficit.). Louisiana, the second worse by percentile, is below the median (I think, anyway) national age demographics for old people, too, though several of the next few down are above it.

I also wouldn't be surprised if there's an element of state-level officials, who don't like the federal government, taking pride in doing anything they can to hurt the federal government on principle. Much like deliberately obfuscating implementations of the ACA, wasting federal money can be seen as an act of rebellion. I'm not sure if it's really a contributing factor; haven't done any research. I just wouldn't be surprised.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

FJ, how would you define nixonism? Google didn't tell me anything... I really like that pseudo-reactionary bit, by the way.

Also, my label: Faux-authoritarian social-liberal centrist. This works so much better in German~

What is it in german?
Semiautoritärer sozialliberaler Zentrist. But I meant the whole inventing political labels business - if there's two things Germany is known for, it's word chains and wars of agression.

Did Florida have any natural catastrophes that year? Because even if I enjoy pointing at how the "south" gets the biggest handouts as much as the next guy that giant leap from second lowest is just... It's just unbelievable. I mean, it's 325 million beyond Lousiana's Net value. Their net value is just 50 million short of the net value of all of America combined. I don't think "lol the-old-people-love-there-state" is enough to explain that. I don't think "republicans"/"right wing politics" could possibly explain that (as happy as I'd be if it could), not with the giant leap between them and other southern rightwing states. You'd need like a fantastically unrealistic combination of the most draining populace, least working policies, least capable administrators, worst weather, plus worst luck thinkable and a cursed wishing well that randomly invests fifty thousand dollars in a business exporting Miamian snow to Antarctica every time anyone throws a coin into it to make that possible.

To be fair, a lot of states running "huge deficits" are that way because of the cost of military bases in their territory, not necessarily because of anything actually to their immediate benefit.

Nixon was essentially the pragmatic Republican personified.

As for myself, I'm a Social-Cyberprogressive Ecological Transhumanist.
That works for myself as well, but can we shoe-horn something about tamed capitalism and a basic income guarantee in there? Regulatory Socialist-Capitalist maybe? Bit more than just social democrat, but not quite "MEANS OF PRODUCTION" as others (though there should be apparatuses to allow workers to own the factory they work in).

Accordng to here, the highest ranking states by military spending (as a percentage of state GDP) are Virgina (#42), Hawaii (#46), Alaska (#31), Alabama (#44), DC, Maryland (#35), Arizona (#40), Missisippi (#42) and  Missiouri (#21). As a percentage of the state GDP, this accounts for 6-13.9%. While there is a weak correllation between the states highest on the other list and the highest military spending states, it is neither decisively related nor does the percentage spent enough to affect their position on the other list by more than one or two places. As for Florida, it is 4th in raw spending, to the tune of 22.8 billion military dollars, but eliminating this amount from the other list would still place them dead last by a massive margin.

I essentially subscribe to liberalism for people who don't like liberals, if that makes any sense.

I've also got a bit of a social conservative streak...I don't want people to be happy; I want them to be right.

<3 ILY2 Helgy. Kawaii desu Karlu Marxii!~~

I dunno if "Social democrat" is strong enough, and "socialist-capitalist" is like mashing "fascist-hippy" together to try and say "centrist", but I can't think of a word that means "Give people enough money to survive day-to-day, while retaining the social-mobility and market-responsiveness of capitalism, while enabling the choice of socialist ideas like worker-owned factories, and including care for the environment/sustainability and publicly-funded health-care and tuition*", so I had to pick a word. :I

Of course, I'm a socially-leftist, not just because I'm gay but mostly because I don't see why some third party should be able to tell people what is right in how they live their lives. One of the only things I like about libertarianism is that ideal. I just think that "not helping poor people" is another method of control, and think "not telling people how to live their lives", ALSO includes ENABLING people to be able to live their lives how they want, which includes not starving in the streets.

*The reasons for this should be obvious and I'm annoyed at Canada for half-assing the whole tuition thing. An educated populace is a -good thing- for EVERYONE involved, why put up barriers? Same as a healthy populace.

Old people from New York and other "deficit friendly" states have a tendency to migrate to Florida, thereby making the Northeast in general look a bit better in terms of revenue production and Florida quite a bit worse. I'd imagine if you adjusted for that you'd have Florida be about average in terms of expenditures.
