Sometimes it feels like they are consciously trying to undermine democracy.

Speaking of which, what would happen if all SCOTUS members would suddenly all die at once in suspicious circumstances.

I mean, these are appointed or something, meaning that for the next 40 years a single party will be in complete control of that institution.

The other side would clamor for at least some of the appointees being chosen by Congress/Senate, rather then ALL of them by the President, such an unprecedented occurrence would allow for lawmakers to successfully argue for an exception...  (SCOTUS is the Supreme Court judges right?)

They aren't appointed by the president, they are nominated by the president and have to be accepted by the Senate.

The republicans would fillibuster until the heat death of the universe.

I'm not sure that would be legal for the supreme court but if there's no surpreme court justices to strike it down?  Well a circuit court would probably place an injunction until there is a surpreme court capable of striking down the surpreme court appointment.

IIRC, ever since Obama appointed someone during a recess (which is now being challenged in Noel Canning v. NLRB), Congress has technically never gone to "recess" but kept in some kind of limbo so he can't appoint anyone.

Yep. They have one guy in session the whole time so there can be no recess appointments.

Good thing too, don't want to distract them from all the good work they're doing to get those nominations in order.

[The last nominees I remember getting approved in any normal time was Yellin/Lew, Lew still took too long thanks to horseshit antics from the Right-Wingers on committes]

Don't worry, they're all old people, and there is only a 5/4 conservative majority. These things reset eventually.

Guys, I think you are forgetting something on appointments.

Democrats lowered the level needed to break a filibuster to 51%. The democrats could conceivably ram through 9 young supreme court justices that will side with them forever if they all suddenly died.

Granted, then we start hearing calls to impeach Obama again.

Actually, they still need 60 for most things. It was only lowered to simple majority for federal officials except for Supreme Court justices.

Nonsense; you merely passed it back to its rightful owner. Too bad his celebration day is past or we could have a proper ceremony.
