What are these flying "colons"?

These flying colons are seriously messing up my framerate when moving around the map.
The cant be examined with look.
Anyone know what to do about this?

That's adventurer mode, (k) won't help much.
I have no idea what the colons are, are you using any mods?

You sure they aren't just shrubs? That's what colons usually are.

Colons are also snowflakes during snowstorms. Weather slows down framerate. Also, you might freeze to death.

Might be a snowstorm then, but it's spring :S
They move around the screen extremely fast, they never stay stationary unless I pause. I look like a graphic bug but I can't be sure since I'm rather new to this game.

Turns out it's rain, and now I feel stupid. I was wondering why I was covered in water all the time  ::)
