Argentinian pope it seems.

Edit: Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, Jesuit cardinal of Buenos Aires, AKA pope Francis the first.

Need a Pope? Why not Bergoglio?

Fransiscus actually. I dunno why you silly English always want to cut the names short.
Names of more than two syllables are to be culled to a more functional length.

This is actually a law hidden somewhere in the Guidebook to Functional English, the ultimate text of English linguistic methodology that exists only in a stat of quantum nonexistence flux and yet still dictates the weft and flow of the English language.

I'll uphold my claim to the papacy nonetheless!

I need to not read this thread at work.  The puns are making me giggle.

On topic, I seem to really be missing the big deal on why it matters so much who the new pope is.  A catholic friend tells me that the pope has the authority to change a lot if he really wanted to, but I really can't see much changing.  If they elected a new pope who did make some tangible changes, I'd be pretty surprised.

He is likely not to change things, since he is inherently one of the old guard, always, However. I believe he was the candidate the Curia was rallying behind, at least that's what the NY times told me. If so, it's a victory for the Counter-reformists, or the Romans, as the NYT calls them.

He looks and behaves kinda docile.

And definitely doesn't look like Palpatine, so that's a plus as well.
