Our warrior was brazen bold,
A glint of anger in his eye
He stood for all proclaimed as right,
For justice would he die.
Beware, for Onul’s come to us
Beneath the ground, the sound
Of feet and wings arises up
And travels through our rocky mound.
He is a Dwarven knight of might,
Our warrior of brazen light.
His hair is ragged, pale and fierce
He is a most dejected sight.
Fear not! Fear not! The beasts
Of stone and moon and dark
Did fall before his gleaming sword;
Did perish gleaming from that spark.
His beard is long and tasseled now,
But in his head he yet recalls
A time when he was great and feared,
An age of wars and walls.
A time when winter threw its might
Against his hardy kin,
And bit the skin amidst the fight,
To get the best and try to win.
The mountains barred his passage through
Their dark and dreary pass.
He smote the walls and down they fell
He fought the beasts on rock and grass.
He fought to live, and live he did.
His flame is brought to heel,
And smoulders now within
Awaiting but a prod to heal.
And Onul came, the fool, when peace
Had turned our hero half to stone.
But now a foe came up, he rose
To turn the creature back to bone.
Down stairs he sped, a gleaming star
That shone and glowed afar.
He came to darkling door and passed,
No stone would stand as bar.
And there at last he met his foe,
A fearsome seeming thing indeed.
The light of fungi lit the cavern walls
And showed to him the fiend.
A glitt’ring tower made of stone,
Nay not of grey but green!
A gem and hard as diamond plate,
A harder foe he’d never seen.
A roar unleashed, he leapt up front,
And Onul turned to laugh in gravel tones.
This fort, he knew, was weak
To send but one beneath the stones.
The dwarf was small but quick as light,
And Onul struck at naught.
It tried and strained, but trying failed
To catch the dwarf it sought.
“Perhaps they’re weak,” it mused at last
“But once they must have ruled,
This dwarf before me speeds and bites,
He seems divinely fueled”
Our hero rose before the beast,
Alas it saw him come!
It stopped its search, its looking ceased
For Onol’s turn had come.
A pincer green and glowing bright
It brought to bear on him.
It struck a gleaming brand of pain
That turned the cavern dim.
Our hero, no! Not to the mud!
Don’t fall, who once was tall,
Don’t perish now the one we love,
To stand up we beseech and call!
He stood. Venom in his veins, he stood
And glared at Olon dread.
The beast arose and spread its wings
Above its great and horrid head.
Alas! He struck again, a second bolt
Was laid into our heroes back.
But still he stood, a hero true!
Of heart did he not lack.
Another roar, he used his speed
And sped towards the wall.
“Ah! It flees before my might,
This Dwarf that now will fall!”
But nay, not he, a remnant from
Our prouder days of yore.
He’d fall, he knew, from venom’s tricks
But still he wished to soar.
To fly one final time at last
Before the heavens died to him.
A single tear appeared and fell
Away down far his features grim.
One final roar, and then he fell
Upon his knees before the wall.
The beast with glee came forth with haste
And bore about its awful pall.
A grunt, our hero’s features pale
Were twisted with a sudden strain.
He smote upon a pillar hard
And brought about a stony rain.
Ah, now the beast afeared did turn
And try to go about its way.
But no, our hero smote again
Determined one last time to slay.
And now a rocky mound there grew
And rose about their graves
Where rests the beast our hero slew
Down deep within the caves.
His body bore we from that place
Of death and woeful pain.
To lose our hero out of olden days
To never see him here again.
But harken now, he’s not alive
But now his son is born.
Our hero fought so he would live,
And faced that emerald scorn.
