Also my mother
« on: April 19, 2008, 04:19:00 pm »

This is a transcript of a recent conversation in adventure mode--

...
Adventurer:  Tell me about your family.
Mayor:  I had a cousin named Ushat Fencedwoman.
Mayor:  She was also my mother.
...

A cousin is the child of a parent's sibling, right?  It could technically not be inbreeding.  Maybe even common if dwarves live longer than humans.  But if there is inbreeding, are there any penalties for it?

I guess it's just funny and it makes me wonder if Toady plans to add genetics stuff.

Edit:

Wait, it gets worse!  I don't know what to make of this one:

Hmmm, so the person had a mother, who was also the daughter of her own sister.

Messed up a tad isn't it?

Does DF differentiate between by-blood relations and legal relations?

Anyway, look up the song "I'm My Own Grandpa" sometime.

Okay lets call the mother/cousin MC.
MC is the sister of her own mother or MC is he sister of her own father.
Okay we've got inbreeding.

wouldnt it be more likely that the dwarf in questions father married his sisters daughter?

his fathers sister would be his aunt, the child of his aunt would be his cousin, his father married his cousin who then gave birth to the dwarf in question making her both his mother and his cousin. His aunt would then also be his maternal grandmother (the mother of his mother.)

makes perfect sense to me, besides when have dwarves let a little thing like inbreeding bother them.

We'll I'm surprised that this hasn't been happening more...
You do notice that most dwarves have the IQ and reasoning skills of a pet rock...
And that inbreeding causes mental *ahem* instability...

Catch my drift?  ;)

In theory, but in gameplay (not sure about world gen), because he is a father, that means he was already married.  As far as I know, dwarves don't currently get remarried.

I can only reason that your files have been corrupted with your CK files, and the dwarf's mother somehow carried the 'Lustful' tag.

I'm not suggesting he remarried, if we start with a brother and sister, and the sister marries a third dwarf and has a child, the brother becomes that child's uncle.

then if that dwarf were to marry his sisters daughter (his niece) and she then later has a child (a 3rd generation), that child's mother would be both his fathers wife and his fathers niece. and the fathers sister would be both his aunt and his grandmother.

at no point does anyone get married more than once. and the only reason his father is a father is because of his marriage to his niece. he wasn't a father before the fact.

Aw, see, you totally trounced me with logic and gave no indication you liked my CK reference.

You might as well just lock me in a room with a GCS.

I must confess that your CK reference totally goes over my head. I am barely a beardling of a dwarf when it comes to DF

Child kidnapper?

Chert knitwear?

Curried kitten?

It could be any of these things knowing DF

Crusader Kings is a fun game by Paradox Interactive.  It's a dark ages wargame.  The combat is kinda thin but the politics is quite detailed.  There's enough depravity that by all rights it should be named "The Aristocrats."  The nobles have quite a penchant for incest.  While you can prevent incest inside your own court, any family members outside your court consider it quite fashionable.  I once bestowed a county upon my son only to have him come back the very next day asking for his cousin's hand in marriage.

Given the era and class of the people in question, marriage between cousins is fairly normal.  It's certainly not depraved.  If he'd asked for his sister's hand, though, that'd be a different matter.
