I like the idea of breaching the clouds. I like the idea of flying invasions.

I think if we're going to have enemies living in the clouds, it should be more like Jack and the Beanstalk than Dante's Paradisio. Not necessarily giants proper, but not divine. Why would a god of anything but the sky, live in the sky?

Maybe if you get a high-priest type person of the god and kill them than they'll send divine agents to punish you. Like curses

Think about it. Elves come to punish you for killing the trees. If you have a rock god come to punish you for mining rocks, that basically just makes gods slightly angrier elves. More interesting responses would be things like storms, plagues, crops wither, etc.

I'm against, because that would make heaven and the circus cheap knockoffs of each other, rather than an unique, special place.

I'm not against doing something when players reach unusual altitudes, but certainly not a mirror image of down under.

Mining clouds sounds cool.

Actually, heat rises, so wouldn't it be quite warm?

But yes, it's an interesting idea. I think we should at least have some kind of interaction with the gods in that they could wreak havoc with our fortresses if they are displeased.

But something more interesting than sending in an army of any kind. Everyone else already does that.

Perhaps unleashing plagues would be interesting.

Plagues, curses, famines, droughts, nasty syndrome mists, rains of blood, flaming hail, streams turning salty, fish dying, all children become werecreatures, swarms of stockpile-depleting super-vermin...

All mythic-sounding, pissed off deity kind of things, all things the player can work around but which still present a challenge.

I assume thats why people who climb everest wear shorts and t-shirts.

I still think that I'd prefer to wait until the multi-planar stuff and procedurally generate worlds/planes/etc. Even if it'd take him longer to do tha just adding a few more z-levels, it'd probably be a much more flexible framework and allow much more interesting scenarios.

Which is why Dwarves invent the steel umbrella.

This.  I'm not sure that the cosmology appeals to me.  I can see a hades-like underworld, deep beneath the earth.  But a world that floats above on a vast layer of solid cloud?  What, then, of the Sun?  The whole world in between would be a gloomy world of eternal darkness- or at best a hazy twilight glow from the clouds above.  It would be radically different from what I think most of us picture.

I might be down with some unusual features in the sky- like a few isolated cloud-fortresses populated by celestial beings which float over good biomes.  But certainly not a whole layer.

maybe we could have a realm of giants and they have super giants who can destroy walls. But, they would be destroy supports if they were above them. !!FUN!! for the whole fort

IS there a heaven? I was under the assumption that all DF mortals go to Hell, just because Armok enjoys their suffering.

Still, if the area were sufficiently unique and/or challenging, I'd support. (Like what if you couldn't bring any metals or stones without falling through the cloud-cover?) Also I can see Heaven being royally pissed about a bunch of muddy dwarves scurrying around and taking things like they own the place. "We built that gate for a REASON, you know!"
